A Different Job From a City Firetruck

Airport rescue trucks, officially called Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting vehicles or ARFF trucks, do a very different job from the ladder trucks that answer house fires in town. The Roof Turret Built for Distance

Unlike a tall city fire engine, an ARFF truck is built low and wide with a rounded fuselage-shaped tank body, since it needs to cross grass infields and rough shoulder ground beside the runway at speed without tipping over. Six or more oversized tires spread the truck's heavy weight across soft turf, letting it reach a crash site well off the paved surface just as quickly as it could on the runway itself.
