The Nativity and Easter in the Christian Calendar

The two great events of the Christian liturgical year are Christmas and Easter. Christmas celebrates the birth of Jesus, traditionally dated to December 25 in the Western church, though the actual historical date is unknown. Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus following his crucifixion, and falls on a different Sunday each year — calculated as the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. The two feasts are separated by the season of Lent (forty days of fasting and preparation) and have their own visual vocabularies, symbols, and customs.
