Aquaman: History & Fun Facts

More Fun Comics #73 and the King of the Seven Seas

Aquaman debuted in November 1941 in More Fun Comics #73, created by writer Mort Weisinger and artist Paul Norris. He launched at the height of WWII as part of a wave of patriotic superheroes designed to fight Axis enemies, and his early stories often involved sinking Nazi U-boats. Unlike most heroes of his era, his secret identity was barely a secret — he simply went by Aquaman in the water and Arthur Curry on land. He outlasted nearly every other Golden Age second-tier hero because his ocean setting gave writers a setting nobody else was using.

Atlantis and Arthur Curry

The fully developed Aquaman origin came in Adventure Comics #260 in 1959. Arthur Curry is the son of Tom Curry, a human lighthouse keeper, and Atlanna, queen of the lost city of Atlantis. After his mother's death he was raised on land by his father, who taught him to harness the aquatic powers inherited from Atlanna's bloodline. As an adult he discovered his royal heritage, took up the trident, and became both the protector of the surface oceans and the rightful king of an underwater civilization with technology far older than anything humans had built.

Justice League Founding Member

Aquaman is one of the seven founding members of the Justice League of America, alongside Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Green Lantern, and Martian Manhunter. The team debuted in The Brave and the Bold #28 in March 1960. His role in the League is unusual — he is the only member with authority over an entire sovereign nation, which gives stories involving Atlantis a diplomatic weight that team-ups with other heroes do not have. Atlantis has gone to war with the surface world multiple times across DC history, and Aquaman is always the figure standing between the two.

Trident, Scales, and Royal Lineage

The visual elements shown on this coloring page each have specific meaning. The trident — usually depicted with three or five prongs — is a symbol of his kingship and a weapon capable of channeling Atlantean magic. The scaled armor reflects the design tradition of his civilization, which has armored its warriors with marine-life-inspired plating for thousands of years. The gauntlets and boots complete the formal regalia of an Atlantean king. The long hair and beard, modernized for the films, replaced the earlier short-haired clean-shaven look that had defined Aquaman since the 1950s.

From Punchline to Box Office

For decades Aquaman was the butt of pop-culture jokes — the hero who could only talk to fish became shorthand for a useless power. The 2011 Geoff Johns comic relaunch reset the character as a serious warrior-king, and the 2018 James Wan film Aquaman, starring Jason Momoa, took that reset to a global audience. The film earned over $1.1 billion worldwide, became the highest-grossing DC film at the time, and finally established Aquaman as a top-tier draw. The 2018 film's $1.1 billion gross didn't just redefine Aquaman — it turned a character who spent forty years as the butt of pop-culture jokes into one of the highest-grossing DC draws ever made.
