A male lion stands tall with a full mane and a curled tail beside a single acacia tree, and another group of lions rests inside a zoo enclosure with rocks and visitors in front.
Two cheetahs show the other side of the family. One stands alert on open grassland, and the other stands in a safari scene with grass and flat-topped trees behind it. Two tigers follow: one crouched low by a rocky jungle stream with ferns on both sides, the other walking through thick jungle grass. The last page is Daniel in the Lion's Den, with Daniel standing in a stone-arched den, arms raised, and two large lions sitting peacefully beside him.
Manes, stripes and spots give you plenty to do. The standing lion works for ages 3 to 5, while the zoo and jungle scenes have more small leaves and rocks for ages 6 and up.
A lion's roar can carry up to five miles across open, flat savanna on a calm night, letting neighboring prides know where territory lines are drawn.
Lions range from pale yellow to tawny gold, reddish-brown, or even dark brown depending on age and region. Male lions have manes that darken with age - young males have lighter sandy manes while mature males develop deep brown to almost black manes that signal dominance.
Unlike most cats, tigers are strong swimmers and often rest or cool off in streams and rivers during the hottest part of the day.
Wild tigers live in a range of habitats including tropical rainforests, mangrove swamps, grasslands, and temperate forests across South and Southeast Asia. Bengal tigers are found in India and Bangladesh while Amur tigers inhabit the cold forests of the Russian Far East.
The story appears in Daniel 6. Daniel, a Jewish official serving the Persian king Darius, continued to pray to God three times daily even after a royal decree forbade it. He was thrown into a den of lions as punishment. The next morning the king rushed to the den and found Daniel unharmed. Daniel explained that God had sent an angel to shut the lions' mouths.
Lions are the second-largest wild cat after the tiger, with adult males reaching up to 420 pounds and 8 feet in body length. They're the only truly social wild cat, living in family groups called prides of up to 30 individuals.
