From Norse Myth to Santa's Workshop
The Christmas elf has deeper roots than the jolly toy-making helper of modern holiday imagery suggests. In Scandinavian and Norse mythology, elves were powerful, often unsettling supernatural beings — sometimes beautiful and otherworldly, sometimes mischievous or dangerous. In the folklore of rural Norway and Sweden, a smaller domestic spirit called the Tomte or Nisse lived on farmsteads, protecting the family and animals in exchange for a bowl of porridge placed outside on Christmas Eve. Ignoring the Nisse or treating it disrespectfully was said to bring bad luck to the household. This small, helpful domestic spirit is the direct ancestor of the Christmas elf.
As Christmas traditions traveled to North America in the 18th and 19th centuries, these Nordic house spirits merged with other traditions. Washington Irving's 1809 description of Saint Nicholas in "A History of New York" helped establish a playful, miniaturized version of the gift-giver. The 1823 poem then described Santa himself as "a right jolly old elf." By the 1850s and 1860s, writers and illustrators were depicting Santa as surrounded by tiny helpers who made the toys in his workshop. Thomas Nast's Harper's Weekly illustrations established the North Pole factory image — a busy workshop staffed by small elf craftspeople — and by the end of the 19th century the Christmas elf as Santa's workshop helper was fully formed.
The Modern Elf Tradition
The Christmas elf's cultural presence expanded dramatically in the early 21st century with the arrival of "The Elf on the Shelf," a concept introduced by Carol Aebersold and her daughter Chanda Bell in 2005. The book and accompanying small elf doll proposed that scout elves were sent from the North Pole to observe children's behavior and report back to Santa each night, returning to a different spot in the house by morning. Families across North America adopted the tradition enthusiastically, creating an entire culture of elaborate elf staging and sharing photos on social media. The concept turned the Christmas elf from a background character in the Santa mythology into an active participant in the daily life of December households.

Christmas Elf: Free Printable PDF Sheet Coloring FAQ
What does this Christmas elf coloring page show?
This page shows a cheerful full-body Christmas elf in classic costume: a short pointed hat with a bell on top, a short tunic with a wide belt and buckle, striped stockings, and curled pointed shoes with bells at the tips. The elf stands tall with a big happy smile, holding a large wrapped gift box with a bow in both hands.
What do Santa's elves do all year?
According to Christmas tradition, Santa's elves spend the whole year working in his North Pole workshop. They build toys, wrap presents, care for the reindeer, and help Santa keep track of his list. In the busy weeks before Christmas Eve, the workshop runs day and night so every gift is finished in time for the big sleigh ride.
Where do Christmas elves live?
Christmas elves are said to live with Santa Claus at the North Pole, in a hidden village built around his toy workshop. Stories describe cozy wooden cottages, snowy streets, candy-cane lampposts, and stables for the reindeer. Because the North Pole is icy and remote, the elves stay bundled up in warm tunics, pointed hats, and striped stockings like the one in this picture.
Why do elves wear pointed hats and curly shoes?
The classic elf outfit comes from old European folklore, where small magical helpers were drawn in pointed caps and curl-toed shoes to look playful and otherworldly. Victorian Christmas cards and later cartoons gave Santa's helpers red and green tunics, wide belts, and jingle bells so children could spot them easily. The bells also hint at their cheerful, mischievous personalities.
