Snow globes are widely credited to Erwin Perzy, an Austrian instrument mechanic who was trying to improve surgical lamps in 1900 and noticed that semolina flakes suspended in water created a snow-like effect when shaken. He soon shifted from surgical tools to building decorative globes, and his family's company still makes them in Vienna today.

What Actually Floats Inside

Modern snow globes use a mix of distilled water and glycerin, a thick, syrupy liquid that slows the flakes down so they drift gently instead of sinking straight to the bottom. The floating "snow" itself has been made from materials as varied as ground bone, plastic bits, and reflective glitter over the decades.

From Paris Fairs to Family Shelves

Snow globes gained early popularity at the 1878 and 1889 Paris World's Fairs, where small souvenir domes were sold as novelties long before they became a Christmas staple. By the mid-1900s, manufacturers were mass-producing them with holiday scenes, turning a scientific curiosity into a seasonal collectible.

Miniature Scenes as Storytelling

Because everything inside a snow globe has to fit in a small sealed space, designers often compress an entire scene, such as a tree, a tiny figure, and falling snow, into just a few simple shapes.
