Dragon: A Capsule Shaped for Reentry and Reuse
A Shape Chosen for Surviving Reentry
Dragon's rounded, wide-bottomed shape is often nicknamed a "gumdrop" silhouette, and that shape is not just for looks: the broad flat base acts as a heat shield that spreads out the intense heat of atmospheric reentry, similar to shapes used on NASA's Apollo and Orion capsules decades earlier. A pointed nose-cone shape like a rocket's would concentrate that heat far more dangerously in one small area.
From Cargo Runs to Carrying Astronauts
The first version of Dragon began flying uncrewed cargo missions to the International Space Station in 2012, making SpaceX the first private company to dock a spacecraft with the station. A newer version called Crew Dragon carried NASA astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley to the station in May 2020, the first crewed orbital flight launched from American soil in nearly a decade.
The Trunk: A Part That Never Comes Home
Below the main capsule sits an unpressurized section called the trunk, which holds the folded solar panels that unfold once Dragon reaches orbit and provides extra storage space for unpressurized cargo on some missions. The trunk separates and burns up in the atmosphere before the capsule itself begins reentry, since it has no heat shield and is not meant to survive the trip home.
A Hinged Hatch Built for Docking
The nose cap at the very top of Dragon hinges open to reveal a docking mechanism that connects the capsule directly to a port on the International Space Station, letting astronauts float straight between the two spacecraft. That same hatch stays closed and sealed throughout launch and reentry to protect the docking hardware from heat and vibration.
Splashing Down Instead of Landing on a Runway
Unlike the winged Space Shuttle that glided to a runway landing, Dragon returns to Earth by parachute and splashes down in the ocean, where a recovery ship retrieves the capsule and its crew. SpaceX chose ocean splashdown partly because it is gentler on the capsule's structure and allows the same capsule to be refurbished and flown again on a future mission.
A Capsule Designed to Fly Again
Several Dragon capsules have now flown multiple missions each, with SpaceX refurbishing the heat shield, parachutes, and internal systems between flights rather than building an entirely new capsule every time. That reuse mirrors the same cost-saving philosophy SpaceX applies to its reusable Falcon 9 rocket boosters.
Round Windows for a View of Space
Crew Dragon includes four windows total, giving astronauts a direct view of Earth and space rather than relying only on cameras and screens, a deliberate design choice after earlier capsule concepts considered skipping windows entirely to save weight. Astronauts aboard the capsule have described the view as one of the most striking parts of the ride to and from the space station.
A Pad Abort Test Before Any Crew Flew
Before ever carrying astronauts, Dragon proved its emergency escape system during a pad abort test in 2015, firing its built-in SuperDraco thrusters to rocket the capsule safely away from a simulated launch-pad failure in only a few seconds. That test gave NASA confidence that a crew could escape a dangerous situation on the ground before Crew Dragon was ever certified to fly people.

Dragon Capsule Coloring FAQ
What is a Dragon capsule?
Dragon is a spacecraft built by SpaceX that carries astronauts and cargo to and from the International Space Station, launching on top of a Falcon 9 rocket and returning to Earth by parachute.
Is this Dragon capsule coloring page free to print?
Yes. This Dragon capsule coloring page is completely free to download or print for personal, classroom, and homeschool use, with no sign-up or watermark.
Why is the capsule wider at the bottom than at the top?
The wide flat base is a heat shield shaped to spread and manage the extreme heat of reentry, while the narrower rounded top keeps the capsule streamlined and holds the hinged docking hatch.
What is the rectangular section with wings below the capsule?
That section is the trunk, an unpressurized cylinder that carries the capsule's solar panels and stays attached during the mission before separating just before reentry.
