A Debut Flight With a Car On Board

Nearly Three Falcon 9s of Thrust

With 27 engines firing across its three cores at liftoff, Falcon Heavy produces roughly five million pounds of thrust, making it capable of lifting far heavier satellites and deep-space payloads than a single Falcon 9 could manage alone. That combined power lets Falcon Heavy carry government, military, and commercial payloads that need extra performance to reach distant or heavy orbits.

A Rocket Built for the Toughest Missions

Falcon Heavy has since launched national security satellites, a NASA mission called Psyche bound for a metal-rich asteroid, and other payloads too large or too far for a standard Falcon 9 to carry efficiently. Each of these missions relies on the same fundamental design proven on that first 2018 test flight.

Reusability Applied to a Triple Rocket

Just like a standard Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy's side boosters are designed to separate, fly back, and land for reuse on future missions, while the center core sometimes lands on a droneship depending on how much fuel a given mission needs. That reusable design keeps Falcon Heavy's launch costs far lower than a fully disposable heavy-lift rocket of similar power would cost to fly.

Sending a Spacecraft Toward a Metal Asteroid

In October 2023, Falcon Heavy launched NASA's Psyche spacecraft on a multi-year journey toward a metal-rich asteroid of the same name, a mission that needed the rocket's extra power to reach such a distant target efficiently. Missions like Psyche show why heavy-lift rockets remain valuable even in an era when most routine satellite launches fly on smaller, single-core vehicles.

A Wider Fairing for Larger Payloads

Falcon Heavy can be flown with an extra-wide payload fairing borrowed from an earlier expendable rocket design, giving it room to carry bulkier satellites and spacecraft than the standard Falcon 9 fairing allows. That option has made Falcon Heavy attractive for national security payloads and space telescopes that simply will not fit inside a narrower rocket nose.
