About This Collection

Another basket is packed with husked corn cobs, two more leaning against it in their peeled-back husks.

Three scarecrows stand guard: one with button eyes and a patched hat, one in a cornfield with a crow, and one tied to a post with three pumpkins and a cornstalk at its feet. A pumpkin patch grows among curling vines near a fence post. Two pages are about the leaves themselves, a maple and oak leaf wreath with three mini pumpkins and an acorn border, and kids raking leaves near a turkey and a barn.

The baskets and the wreath have big, clear outlines for ages 3 to 5. The scarecrows and the pumpkin patch carry more small leaves and vines, so they suit ages 6 and up. Orange, red, gold and brown handle most of it.

Fall Coloring FAQ

Why do farmers use scarecrows?

A scarecrow is meant to scare crows and other birds away from seeds and ripe crops. It works better when the farmer moves it around, since birds learn that a still one isn't a threat.

When is corn harvested in the United States?

Mostly between September and November, depending on the kind of corn and the weather. Sweet corn for dinner comes in earlier, in summer.

How many months does it take to grow a pumpkin?

Roughly three to four months from seed to ripe pumpkin. Farmers plant in late spring so they're ready by October.

What is a cornucopia?

It's a horn-shaped basket overflowing with fruit and vegetables, called the horn of plenty. The idea comes from ancient Greek stories and stands for a big harvest.

Why do leaves change color in fall?

Leaves stop making green chlorophyll as days get shorter, so the yellow and orange colors that were hiding show up. Reds come from sugars that get trapped in the leaf.

What grows from an acorn?

An oak tree. Squirrels bury acorns to eat later, and the ones they forget can sprout, as the Acorn and Leaf Pattern design hints.
