Two smiling children kneeling on either side of a large round wooden tub, hands clasped behind their backs.
About this design
Bobbing for apples is believed to trace back to a Roman festival honoring Pomona, the goddess of fruit and orchards, which arrived in Britain during the Roman occupation and gradually blended with local autumn harvest customs over the following centuries. That ancient harvest connection is part of why the game still feels so tied to fall celebrations today, even though most players have no idea of its Roman origin. Apples were one of the most abundant harvest fruits available, which made them a natural centerpiece for the game.
In parts of the British Isles, bobbing for apples was once played as a courtship game at autumn gatherings, with young people believing the way an apple was caught could predict future romance or marriage.
