Mermaid Legends Across the World

Mermaid legends have appeared in almost every culture with a coastline. Ancient Assyrian cylinder seals from around 1000 BCE depict fish-tailed goddesses offering protection to boats. Greek sailors told of Nereids — fifty sea nymphs who were daughters of the ocean god Nereus — who helped navigators through storms and narrow straits. In West Africa, the Yoruba goddess Yemoja is depicted as a powerful, beautiful woman who rules the ocean and protects those who cross it. In Southeast Asia, the Javanese queen of the Southern Sea is believed to dwell in the Indian Ocean south of Java, and offerings are still left at the shore today.

Hans Christian Andersen published "The Little Mermaid" in 1837, drawing on Nordic sea legends and German Romantic literature. The bronze sculpture of his mermaid, created by Edvard Eriksen in 1913, sits at Copenhagen harbor and draws over a million visitors a year. Disney's 1989 animated film introduced a new generation to the character, and the sea-green fish tail, flowing red hair, and seashell-decorated silhouette it created became the visual template for mermaid coloring pages worldwide.
