Sandcastles, Beach Traditions, and Summer Seashore Facts
The History of Sandcastle Building
Sandcastle building as a deliberate art form traces back to the early 20th century. The first recorded competitive sandcastle event took place on the beach at Revere, Massachusetts, in 1897, and the practice spread quickly along New England and Great Lakes resort towns as beach tourism grew. However, humans have shaped sand into mounds and structures for far longer — ancient coastal cultures from the Mediterranean to the Pacific built sand mounds for ceremonial purposes and landmark navigation. The key ingredient that makes architectural sandcastles possible is wet sand: water creates surface tension bridges between sand grains, allowing them to stick without crumbling under their own weight.
The Science of Sand and Water in Sandcastles
The perfect sandcastle sand is neither too dry nor too saturated. Engineers who study granular materials have found that the ideal water content for structural sandcastles is between 1 and 3 percent by weight — roughly the consistency of damp beach sand just above the waterline after a wave recedes. At this moisture level, water forms small pendular bridges between individual sand grains that create a capillary force strong enough to hold towers several meters tall. Too much water floods those bridges; too little and the sand loses cohesion entirely. The largest competitive sandcastle ever built stood 69 feet (21 meters) tall and was constructed in Binz, Germany, in 2019 using 5,500 tons of sand.
Seagulls: The Seaside Bird Kids Recognize
The birds commonly called seagulls belong to the family Laridae, with over 50 species worldwide. The herring gull (Larus argentatus) and laughing gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) are the species most commonly seen by beachgoers along North American coastlines. Herring gulls are known for following fishing boats to snatch discarded catch, but they also eat shellfish — a behavior that involves flying to height and dropping clams or mussels onto hard surfaces to crack them open. Gulls have a strong memory for location: studies have shown that herring gulls can remember and return to the same nesting site for over 20 years. Their distinctive calls are so associated with the seaside that recordings are used in film and television to establish beach settings.
Beach Umbrellas and the Culture of Summer Shade
The beach umbrella as a sun-protection accessory became commercially available in the United States in the 1920s, when the resort tourism industry on the Jersey Shore and Gulf Coast began providing rental umbrellas alongside chairs. Before that, vacationers either brought their own parasols or retreated to bathhouse shade. The classic striped canvas beach umbrella pattern — with alternating color bands radiating from the center pole — became standard because the stripe design showed off color against the bright sand and sky without fading as quickly as solid dye lots. By the 1950s, the beach umbrella had become a standard feature in vacation photography and vacation-themed art, appearing alongside sandcastles in countless postcards from Atlantic City to Miami Beach.
Ocean Waves and Beach Safety for Kids
Ocean waves at sandy beaches are generated by wind over open water. The longer a wind blows over a stretch of ocean called the fetch, the larger and more regular the waves that arrive at shore. The waves children see breaking near the sandcastle line are called "spilling breakers" — the type that gently tumble over as they reach shallow water rather than curling and crashing. Spilling breakers form on beaches with gradual slopes and are generally safer for young children than plunging breakers, which form on steeper beaches. In the United States, over 100 million people visit ocean beaches each summer, making beach swimming the most popular outdoor recreational activity in the country by participation numbers.
