Bruce Meyers and the Meyers Manx

The dune buggy as most people picture it today began with a boat builder named Bruce Meyers, who in 1964 mounted a lightweight fiberglass body onto a shortened Volkswagen Beetle floorpan and called it the Meyers Manx. The Beetle's rear-mounted, air-cooled engine and simple mechanicals made it an easy donor car, and Meyers's stripped-down fiberglass shell turned a everyday commuter chassis into a machine built purely for fun on loose ground.

Racing Born in the Baja Desert

Dune buggies quickly moved from beach cruising to serious desert racing. In 1967 organizers ran the first Mexican 1000 rally down the Baja California peninsula, an event that grew into today's famous Baja 1000, and early Manx-style buggies were among the first vehicles to tackle that brutal off-road course. That desert racing heritage is why buggies are still closely associated with sand dunes and open desert terrain rather than paved roads.

Stripped-Down Weight Saving by Design

Every part of a dune buggy's design fights against weight. There are no doors, no roof, no glass windows, and often barely any body panels beyond a floor and a curved roll bar for protection. That minimalist approach, visible in the bare tube frame you can see clean through on this coloring page, keeps the buggy light enough to skim over soft sand instead of digging in and getting stuck the way a heavier off-road truck might.

Balloon Tires Built for Soft Sand

The oversized, rounded tires on a dune buggy are called balloon or paddle tires, and they run at very low air pressure so a wide footprint spreads the buggy's weight across the sand's surface. That wide, soft contact patch is what lets a dune buggy float over dunes that would swallow a narrow street tire in seconds, and it is one of the clearest visual differences between a buggy and a UTV's more traditional off-road tread.

From VW Kit Car to Tube-Frame Sand Rail

Meyers's fiberglass shell inspired thousands of kit-car copies built on Volkswagen Beetle floorpans through the 1960s and 1970s. Over time, dedicated sand-rail builders went a step further and replaced the Beetle floorpan entirely with a custom welded tube-steel chassis, exactly like the fully exposed frame shown here, trading the last bit of bodywork for even lighter weight and a wider track for extra stability at speed across open dunes.

Dune Riding as a Family Sport

Off-highway vehicle parks across sand-dune regions of the American West, such as the Imperial Sand Dunes in California and Little Sahara in Utah, now welcome thousands of dune buggies, sand rails, and UTVs every riding season. Many riders travel in family groups, camping trailer-side and running the dunes together during the day, which has turned a once niche desert-racing hobby into one of the more social forms of off-road recreation. A tall radio whip antenna is a common safety add-on so riders can see each other coming over blind dune crests, though the buggy pictured here keeps to its classic stripped-down racing form.
