Elsa: History & Fun Facts

From Hans Christian Andersen to Arendelle

Elsa’s origin story reaches back to an 1844 fairy tale. Hans Christian Andersen’s "The Snow Queen" features the title character as a cold, distant villain who kidnaps a boy named Kay by encasing his heart in ice. Disney animators spent more than a decade trying to adapt that story before screenwriter Jennifer Lee and director Chris Buck reframed the Snow Queen as the protagonist rather than the villain. The pivotal decision — making Elsa Anna’s estranged sister rather than an adversary — transformed the project from a conventional good-versus-evil fantasy into a story about fear, isolation, and the value of accepting who you are. That shift also turned Elsa into one of the most complex characters in Disney animation history.

Designing the Ice Powers and the Gown

Visual development artist Claire Keane (daughter of The Little Mermaid animator Glen Keane) designed Elsa’s look across hundreds of iterations. The final ice gown visible in this coloring page — the fitted bodice, the sheer cape, the trailing skirt — was meant to visually represent Elsa’s freedom after years of hiding her powers. Early concept designs showed her in heavy dark robes that conveyed danger; the shift to a translucent pale gown was the visual cue that she had chosen openness over concealment. The technical challenge of rendering ice and snow in a believable but still animated way led the production team to develop new simulation software specifically for Frozen.

The Ice Palace and "Let It Go"

The most technically demanding sequence in Frozen was the ice palace construction scene accompanying "Let It Go." Directors Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee initially planned it as a quiet, introspective moment. When Idina Menzel’s performance of the song arrived, they rebuilt the sequence to match its scale. The palace uses a fractal-based geometry system in which ice crystals self-assemble according to mathematical rules rather than being hand-placed by animators. The result — a palace rising from the North Mountain in about ninety seconds of screen time — required more computing hours than any other single sequence in the film. "Let It Go" won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2014 and has been performed live in concert worldwide by Idina Menzel hundreds of times since.

Frozen’s Box Office Record and Cultural Impact

Frozen earned $1.28 billion worldwide in 2013, surpassing The Lion King to become the highest-grossing animated film ever made at that point. It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song. The soundtrack sold over 10 million copies worldwide. Broadway’s Frozen adaptation opened in 2018 and ran for 825 performances. Frozen 2, released in November 2019, grossed $1.45 billion worldwide, making Elsa the lead character of two of the ten highest-grossing animated films ever made. No other Disney princess — and no other original animated film character created after 2010 — has matched that box-office footprint.

Elsa’s Costume in Frozen 2

For Frozen 2, the design team updated Elsa’s look for a slightly older, more adventurous version of the character. The ice gown became a sleek white outfit suited for crossing unknown terrain, with the same braid but a shorter hemline and boots designed for active movement. Elsa’s powers also expanded in the sequel — she calls and tames the Water Nokk (a spirit horse made of water), crosses a mythical dark sea, and reaches Ahtohallan, a magical river that holds memories. The sequel’s visual design team created a new software system to render falling autumn leaves interacting with ice and water effects in real time, a technical achievement that won a technical award from the Visual Effects Society in 2020.
