Mario: History & Fun Facts

Jumpman to Mario: The Arcade Origin

Mario’s first appearance was in the 1981 Donkey Kong arcade cabinet, where he was listed as "Jumpman" — a barrel-jumping construction worker whose simple shape was dictated entirely by the limits of early arcade graphics. Designer Shigeru Miyamoto needed a character that could be understood at a glance on a low-resolution screen. The cap eliminated the need to animate hair, the overalls meant the arms could move without a separate shirt animation, and the mustache filled in a face without requiring a detailed mouth. Every visual shortcut Miyamoto took became a permanent design choice. Nintendo officially named the character Mario after Mario Segale, the Italian-American landlord of their first American office.

Super Mario Bros. and the Save of a Generation

The video game industry crashed in North America in 1983, with revenues falling from $3.2 billion in 1983 to $100 million in 1985. Nintendo released Super Mario Bros. alongside the Nintendo Entertainment System in the United States in October 1985. The game’s combination of precise controls, inventive level design, and the reward of finding hidden blocks revived consumer interest in gaming almost single-handedly. Super Mario Bros. sold approximately 40 million copies over its lifetime — the best-selling single video game title until Wii Sports overtook it in 2009. Miyamoto’s design of a left-to-right scrolling world with enemies, power-ups, and warp zones became the template for an entire genre.

Power-Ups and the Mushroom Kingdom

Super Mario Bros. introduced three power-ups that are now part of global visual vocabulary: the Super Mushroom that doubles Mario’s size, the Fire Flower that lets him throw fireballs, and the Super Star that makes him temporarily invincible. The Mushroom Kingdom setting — with its question-mark blocks, green pipes, floating bricks, and end-of-level flagpoles — has been replicated in thirty-eight years of mainline games. Super Mario Bros. 3, released in Japan in 1988 and North America in 1990, sold 18 million copies and introduced the Tanooki Suit, the Frog Suit, and a world map structure that made the game feel like a complete journey rather than a series of disconnected stages.

3D Mario and the Jump to New Dimensions

Super Mario 64, released for the Nintendo 64 in 1996, was the first fully 3D platform game and the most influential game design document of its decade. Almost every 3D platformer made after 1996 borrowed its camera system, its collectible-star structure, or its hub-world design. Super Mario Odyssey, released in 2017 for the Nintendo Switch, sold 26 million copies and introduced the Cappy mechanic that let Mario possess enemies and objects. The game’s New Donk City level — a realistic city where a full-size Mario appears cartoonishly small — was a deliberate commentary on the character’s history.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Nintendo’s Film Era

The Super Mario Bros. Movie, released in April 2023, grossed $1.36 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing video game movie ever made and the second-highest-grossing animated film of that year. Chris Pratt voiced Mario, Jack Black voiced Bowser, and Anya Taylor-Joy voiced Princess Peach. The film’s success prompted Nintendo to announce additional animated film projects. Mario has also appeared in over 200 games across every Nintendo platform, making him the most prolific character in gaming history. His recognizable costume — red cap, blue overalls, brown boots, thick mustache — is consistently ranked in polls as the most recognizable fictional character on the planet alongside Mickey Mouse.

Super Mario Coloring FAQ

What does this Mario coloring page show?

The image shows Mario in a classic jumping pose with both arms raised and fists in the air, celebrating mid-leap. His round cap with the M emblem, overalls with shoulder buttons, big round nose, thick mustache, and large boots are all clearly outlined and ready to color. Kids can use his classic red-and-blue color scheme or pick any palette they like.

When did Mario first appear in a video game?

Mario first appeared in the 1981 arcade game Donkey Kong as "Jumpman." He was renamed Mario in Donkey Kong Jr. (1982) and got his iconic plumber backstory in Mario Bros. (1983). Super Mario Bros., released for the Nintendo Famicom and NES in 1985, sold 40 million copies and is one of the best-selling games of all time.

Who designed Mario?

Shigeru Miyamoto created Mario while designing Donkey Kong at Nintendo in 1981. The character’s short, round body was chosen because the hardware couldn’t animate a full running human smoothly — overalls removed the need to animate arm swing, the cap removed the need to animate hair, and the mustache removed the need to animate a mouth. Every limitation became a design feature.
