The Story of Jesus Walking on Water
The Sea of Galilee Setting
The Sea of Galilee is a freshwater lake in northern Israel, roughly 21 kilometers long and 13 kilometers wide. Despite being called a sea, it sits well below sea level — about 209 meters below the Mediterranean. The lake was the center of a busy fishing economy in first-century Judea, and many of Jesus's disciples were experienced fishermen who had worked its waters since childhood. Sudden storms on the lake were well known to local sailors because cold air from the surrounding hills could rush down and churn up dangerous waves with little warning. That geographic detail gives the walking-on-water account its weight: these were experienced sailors who understood the danger of night storms, not casual travelers unfamiliar with the water.
The Night of the Miracle
According to Matthew 14, the event took place the same night Jesus had fed five thousand people on a hillside with five loaves and two fish. He sent his disciples ahead by boat while he went up a mountain to pray. By the fourth watch of the night — somewhere between 3 and 6 a.m. — the boat was well out on the lake and the disciples were struggling against strong headwinds. Jesus came toward them walking on the water. At first the disciples were terrified, thinking they were seeing a ghost. Jesus identified himself and told them not to be afraid.
Peter Steps Out of the Boat
The detail unique to Matthew's account is Peter's response. Peter asked Jesus to command him to come out on the water, and Jesus said "Come." Peter stepped out of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. When Peter noticed the strong wind, he became afraid and began to sink. He cried out for Jesus to save him. Jesus immediately reached out and caught him, asking why he doubted. They climbed back into the boat together, and the wind stopped. The disciples then worshipped Jesus, saying "Truly you are the Son of God." This episode is frequently cited in Christian teaching as an illustration of faith in action versus faith undermined by fear.
The Miracle in Christian Tradition
The walking on water story has been depicted in Christian art from at least the fourth century. Early mosaics in Roman and Byzantine churches showed the scene with Peter sinking, because that detail emphasized the human struggle with faith alongside the miraculous act itself. Renaissance painters including Tintoretto, Ludovico Carracci, and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld each painted versions of the scene, typically emphasizing the dramatic contrast between calm water beneath Jesus's feet and the churning waves pulling Peter down. The image of a figure walking calmly across stormy water became one of the most recognized symbols in Western religious iconography.
The Phrase "Walking on Water" in Language
Beyond its religious context, the phrase "walking on water" entered everyday language as an idiom for accomplishing something considered impossible. Someone described as "walking on water" is seen as uniquely capable or operating above normal human limitations. The phrase appears in political speeches, sports commentary, business writing, and popular culture, usually as a hyperbolic way of praising an exceptional achievement. Its use as a common expression in English is a direct result of the story's deep cultural penetration across centuries of Christian influence on Western language.
