The Last Supper — Story and Tradition

The Setting of the Last Supper

According to the synoptic Gospels — Matthew, Mark, and Luke — the Last Supper took place on the night of Passover, the Jewish festival commemorating the Exodus from Egypt. Jesus had sent two disciples ahead to prepare a large upper room in Jerusalem. The meal they shared was a Passover Seder, which included unleavened bread, bitter herbs, and wine. Passover was one of the three pilgrimage festivals when Jewish families from across Judea and the diaspora traveled to Jerusalem. The city would have been crowded with pilgrims that week, and the symbolic timing of the meal — a celebration of liberation from slavery — gave special weight to what Jesus said and did at the table.

The Institution of the Eucharist

During the meal, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and said "This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." He then took a cup of wine and said it represented the new covenant in his blood. This act of blessing, breaking, and sharing bread and wine became the foundation of the Christian practice known variously as the Eucharist, Holy Communion, or the Lord's Supper. Theological interpretations vary widely across denominations — some understand the bread and wine as literally becoming the body and blood of Jesus (transubstantiation), others as spiritually representing his presence, and others as a symbolic memorial. Despite these differences, the meal is the most central act of communal worship across the breadth of Christianity.

The Betrayal Announcement

The Gospels record that at some point during the supper, Jesus announced that one of those at the table would betray him. In John's account, Peter asked the beloved disciple to find out who it was, and Jesus indicated Judas Iscariot by dipping a piece of bread and handing it to him. Judas then left. The announcement of betrayal within a shared meal — bread eaten together being a symbol of intimate trust in the ancient world — heightened the drama of the scene. Artists depicting the moment of betrayal revelation frequently chose the instant of shock and recognition among the disciples as the emotionally charged subject, most famously Leonardo da Vinci.

Leonardo da Vinci's Famous Painting

Leonardo da Vinci painted The Last Supper between approximately 1495 and 1498 on a wall of the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. At 460 by 880 centimeters, the mural depicts the moment Jesus announces that one disciple will betray him. The composition places Jesus at the center against a bright window with the disciples arranged in four groups of three on either side, each group reacting differently to the news. Judas is shown recoiling and clutching a bag — traditionally understood as the bag of silver he received for handing Jesus over to the authorities. The painting became so influential that its long-table side-view composition, with Jesus centered and disciples spread to both sides, is still the dominant template for Western depictions of the Last Supper in art, illustration, and religious materials including coloring pages.

The Last Supper Room in Jerusalem

The site traditionally associated with the Last Supper is the Cenacle (from the Latin coenaculum, meaning dining room), located on Mount Zion in Jerusalem. The current structure dates primarily from the Crusader period of the twelfth century, built on top of earlier Byzantine and Roman layers. The room draws Christian pilgrims who come to visit the traditional site of both the Last Supper and, in Christian tradition, the day of Pentecost. Scholarly debate about the exact historical location of the original upper room continues, but the Cenacle has been a pilgrimage destination for at least sixteen hundred years, making it one of the longest continuously venerated sites in Jerusalem.
