Lamborghini's Return to SUVs After the LM002

Lamborghini launched the Urus in 2018, its first SUV since the boxy, military-styled LM002 that the company built in small numbers between 1986 and 1993.

That 25-year gap made the Urus a significant bet for Lamborghini. The brand had built its entire modern identity around low, angular supercars, and an SUV risked diluting that image if it didn't drive like a true Lamborghini.

Named After an Extinct Wild Ox

The Urus takes its name from the aurochs, a large wild ox known in Latin as Bos primigenius, or Urus, that once roamed Europe, Asia, and North Africa before going extinct in the 1600s.

The name fits Lamborghini's tradition of naming cars after powerful animals and bullfighting terms, giving the brand's first modern SUV an identity tied to size and strength rather than speed alone, much like the bulls that inspired the Miura, Aventador, and Huracan before it.

A Shared Platform With Family Rivals

The Urus rides on the Volkswagen Group's MLB Evo platform, the same underlying architecture used by the Audi Q7 and Q8, the Porsche Cayenne, and the Bentley Bentayga.

Sharing a platform across four different luxury brands let Lamborghini's parent company split enormous engineering costs, while each brand tuned the suspension, styling, body panels, and interior to fit its own identity and driving character.

A Twin-Turbo V8 Under the Hood

Rather than Lamborghini's signature naturally aspirated V10 or V12, the Urus uses a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 shared with other Volkswagen Group models, producing up to 657 horsepower in the Urus S and Urus Performante trims.

The turbocharged engine trades some of the high-revving drama found in the Huracan for the low-end torque an SUV needs to tow, carry passengers, and still sprint to 60 mph in roughly 3.5 seconds, numbers that beat many dedicated sports cars from the same era.

The Track-Focused Urus Performante

Lamborghini released the Urus Performante in 2022, cutting about 47 kilograms of weight and raising ground clearance settings for light off-road use alongside sharper on-road handling.

The Performante added a dedicated Rally driving mode and lifted suspension setting, letting an SUV built mostly for city and highway use also handle gravel and dirt roads with more confidence.

Built Alongside Supercars in Sant'Agata Bolognese

Lamborghini builds the Urus at its historic Sant'Agata Bolognese factory in Italy, the same site that has produced the brand's supercars since the Miura in the 1960s. Lamborghini expanded and modernized the factory specifically to add Urus production capacity without slowing down Huracan and Aventador assembly lines.

Since its launch, the Urus has consistently outsold every other Lamborghini model combined, making it the financial backbone that funds the company's continued supercar development. That sales success also helped Lamborghini invest in hybrid technology for its newer V12 and V8 models.

A Nurburgring Lap Time for SUVs

When Lamborghini first tested the Urus at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, the SUV posted lap times that rivaled some sports cars from just a decade earlier, a result the company used heavily in early marketing.

That performance claim mattered because it separated the Urus from other luxury SUVs built mainly for comfort. Lamborghini wanted buyers to see it as a genuine performance vehicle that happened to seat five people, not a soft crossover wearing a supercar badge.
