The 2014 Successor to the Gallardo

Lamborghini unveiled the Huracan in 2014 as the replacement for the Gallardo, the model that had carried the brand's entry-level supercar line since 2003. The Huracan went on sale for the 2015 model year.

Its arrival mattered because the Gallardo had been Lamborghini's best-selling model ever built. The Huracan needed to keep that sales momentum while feeling meaningfully more modern to buyers.

A Naturally Aspirated V10 Engine

The Huracan uses a 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10, producing between roughly 610 and 640 horsepower depending on the specific version. Lamborghini shares this engine architecture with Audi's R8, built at the same Sant'Agata Bolognese facility.

Keeping the engine naturally aspirated rather than turbocharged gives the Huracan sharper throttle response and a higher, more dramatic redline than most modern hybrid or turbo rivals.

Named After a Legendary Fighting Bull

Like most Lamborghini models, the Huracan takes its name from bullfighting. Huracan was a famous fighting bull from the Spanish Conte de la Patilla ranch, and the Spanish word huracan also means hurricane.

That double meaning fits the brand's long-standing tradition of naming cars after bulls, ranches, or bullfighting terms, a pattern started decades earlier by founder Ferruccio Lamborghini.

The Performante's Nurburgring Lap Record

In 2017, Lamborghini released the Huracan Performante, a lighter and more aerodynamic version that set a production-car lap record at the Nurburgring Nordschleife of 6 minutes 52.01 seconds.

The Performante used a system called ALA, short for Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva, which actively channeled air through the front splitter and rear wing to add or reduce downforce as needed.

The Track-Focused STO Variant

Lamborghini's final major Huracan variant, the STO, arrived in 2020 built almost entirely for track driving. It borrowed body panels and aerodynamic ideas directly from the Huracan Super Trofeo EVO race car, including a single-piece front clamshell that opens to reveal the radiators and front luggage area.

The STO dropped all-wheel drive in favor of rear-wheel drive only, a choice aimed squarely at drivers who wanted the rawest, most direct connection between the throttle and the road. Lamborghini also fitted specially developed tires and a shark fin roof spine borrowed straight from the race car's aerodynamic playbook.

Handing the Torch to the Temerario

Lamborghini ended Huracan production in 2024 after roughly ten years and more than 60,000 units built, making it the brand's best-selling model ever. The Temerario, a turbocharged hybrid V8, took over as its successor.

That handoff marked the end of Lamborghini's naturally aspirated V10 era in its smaller supercar line, which is part of why the Huracan's engine sound remains such a talking point among fans today.

A One-Make Racing Series of Its Own

Lamborghini built a dedicated racing version called the Huracan Super Trofeo EVO for its one-make Super Trofeo racing series, which runs support races at major events across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. A GT3 competition version also races in endurance events like the 24 Hours of Daytona and the Spa 24 Hours.

That racing program gave amateur and professional drivers a way to compete in identical Huracan-based cars, and lessons learned on track fed directly into later road-going Performante and STO models. Several Huracan GT3 cars have gone on to win their class outright at some of the world's toughest endurance races.
