The Petroleum Reitwagen's First Ride

Gottlieb Daimler built the Petroleum Reitwagen in 1885, widely credited as the first true motorcycle, mounting a small combustion engine onto a wooden bicycle-style frame with iron-banded wheels. It only reached about 7 miles per hour, but it proved an engine could power a two-wheeled vehicle balanced by the rider alone.

Within twenty years, dozens of small factories across Europe and the United States were bolting engines onto bicycle frames of their own. Most of those early machines rattled apart within a few hundred miles, since nobody yet understood how much vibration a two-wheeled frame could take.

The V-Twin Engine Shown on This Sheet

The engine sitting between the wheels on this coloring page is shaped like the letter V, a layout called a V-twin where two cylinders lean toward each other at an angle instead of standing side by side. That angled design lets engineers fit a bigger engine into a shorter space, which is why classic cruiser motorcycles look so compact even with a large engine on board.

Air flowing over the finned metal cylinders, visible as ridges on the engine block, cools the motor as the bike rolls down the road. That is also why builders leave the engine exposed rather than hiding it behind body panels the way a car does.

Balancing on Two Wheels at Speed

A moving motorcycle stays upright through a spinning-wheel effect called gyroscopic precession, combined with the rider's own steering adjustments that keep the machine's center of gravity balanced over the tires. That is why a motorcycle feels wobbly standing still but grows steadier the faster it rolls.

The kickstand folded up under the frame in the picture holds the bike upright only while parked. Riders lean the bike slightly and countersteer, pushing the handlebar the opposite direction they want to turn, a trick that feels backward until it becomes second nature.

Spoked Wheels and the Round Headlight

The wire spokes fanning out from each wheel hub, drawn in detail on this sheet, do more than look classic. They flex slightly over bumps, spreading the shock of rough pavement across dozens of thin metal rods instead of one solid rim.

That round headlight mounted high between the front forks became standard on motorcycles decades before car headlights took on their current shapes, since a compact circular lamp was the easiest shape to bolt onto a narrow frame and aim down a dark road.

From Battlefield Messenger to Open-Road Icon

Motorcycles served as fast messenger and scout vehicles in both World Wars because they could dart between trenches and supply lines where trucks could not fit. Riders carried orders, maps, and radio equipment across muddy terrain that would have stalled a heavier vehicle.

After the wars, veterans who learned to ride carried that love of two wheels home, sparking the touring and cruiser culture that fills highways with motorcycles today. Weekend rallies, long-distance touring clubs, and classic bike shows all trace back to that postwar wave of riders who wanted to keep riding once they came home.
