The 2019 Debut of Porsche's First Electric Car

Porsche revealed the Taycan in September 2019 and began deliveries in early 2020, marking the company's first series-production electric vehicle after decades of building gasoline sports cars. The name comes from a Turkish word roughly meaning "lively young horse," a nod to the leaping horse in Porsche's own crest.

The launch mattered beyond one new model. It signaled that Porsche's engineering culture, built on the 911 and Cayenne, could carry over to a battery-electric platform without losing the driving feel the brand is known for.

An 800-Volt Battery Architecture

Most electric cars in 2019 ran on 400-volt systems. Porsche built the Taycan around an 800-volt architecture instead, which was unusual for the time and let the car accept much higher charging power without overheating the cables.

That higher voltage lets a Taycan add roughly 60 miles of range in about five minutes at a fast enough charger, a figure Porsche highlighted heavily in early marketing. Later electric vehicles across the industry copied the same 800-volt approach.

A Two-Speed Transaxle in an Electric Car

Nearly every electric car uses a single-speed gearbox because electric motors make strong torque across a wide range of speeds. The Taycan is a rare exception: its rear axle uses a two-speed transmission, with a low gear for acceleration and a taller gear for efficient highway cruising.

That extra mechanical complexity adds weight and cost, but it lets the Taycan launch hard from a stop while still turning fewer motor revolutions at highway speed, which helps range on long trips.

The Nurburgring Lap Record for Production EVs

In 2024, an updated Taycan Turbo GT lapped the Nurburgring Nordschleife in 7 minutes 7.55 seconds, setting a record for a four-door production electric car on the famous German circuit.

Porsche has used the Nurburgring to develop and prove nearly every model it sells since the 1970s. Running the Taycan on the same circuit as the 911 and Cayman ties the electric sedan back into that long testing tradition.

Cross Turismo and Sport Turismo Body Variants

Porsche later expanded the lineup beyond the standard four-door fastback shown in this outline. The Taycan Cross Turismo adds raised ride height and body cladding for light off-road use, while the Sport Turismo keeps the wagon-like roofline without the extra ground clearance.

Both variants share the same 800-volt platform and motors as the standard Taycan, giving buyers a choice between a lower sport sedan shape and a taller, more practical wagon body.

Formula E Pace Car Duty

Porsche has fielded a factory Formula E race team since 2019, competing in the all-electric open-wheel series on street circuits around the world. A Taycan has served as an official pace and safety car for Formula E events, connecting the road car to Porsche's electric racing program.

That racing tie mirrors how Porsche has long used motorsport to test ideas before they reach showroom cars, from endurance racing brakes to hybrid systems that eventually appeared in road-going 911 and Cayenne models.

Recuperation Braking Tuned by Porsche Engineers

Instead of a single fixed regenerative-braking setting, the Taycan lets a driver adjust how strongly lifting off the accelerator slows the car, ranging from a gentle coast to a firmer pull that feels closer to engine braking in a gasoline Porsche.

Porsche tuned that brake-pedal feel carefully so it matches the progressive response drivers expect from a 911 or Cayman, rather than the grabbier regenerative braking common on many other early electric cars.
