Castles with tall towers were once working buildings, not just storybook backdrops. Between roughly 1066 and 1500, lords across Europe built stone keeps and curtain walls to defend land, store grain, and house garrisons. Towers gave lookouts a long view across fields and rivers, helped archers cover the walls below, and signaled wealth to travelers approaching from miles away. The same shapes — arched windows, thick stone blocks, narrow stairways — later became the stage for fairy-tale princesses waiting for rescue.

Why Medieval Castles Had Tall Towers

Medieval builders made towers tall for three practical reasons: sight, defense, and status. From the top of a square Norman keep, a watchman could spot riders on the horizon long before they reached the gate, giving the garrison time to raise the drawbridge and close the portcullis. Narrow vertical openings called arrow slits — sometimes just 4 inches wide on the outside — let archers shoot out while making it nearly impossible for enemies to shoot in. Early motte-and-bailey castles used wood, but by the 1100s stone keeps like the Tower of London's White Tower replaced them.

Tower Princesses Across Folklore

The locked-tower princess shows up in stories from many cultures. The Brothers Grimm published Rapunzel in their 1812 collection Kinder- und Hausmarchen, but the tale traces back to Giambattista Basile's Petrosinella in 1634 and a French version by Charlotte-Rose de Caumont de La Force in 1698. Saint Barbara, a Christian martyr from the third century, was said to have been shut in a tower by her father and is often pictured beside one in medieval art. Alfred Lord Tennyson's 1832 poem The Lady of Shalott placed a cursed weaver in a river island tower near Camelot. Persian and Indian folktales feature similar maidens guarded in high chambers, suggesting the trope spread along old trade routes.

A Real Tower You Can Still Climb

Trim Castle in County Meath, Ireland, holds the largest surviving Anglo-Norman keep in Europe, with a central tower rising about 25 meters above the River Boyne. Built between 1172 and 1224 by Hugh de Lacy and his son Walter, it has 20 sides arranged in a cruciform plan — unusual for its time. Visitors today can climb the stone stairs to the upper floors and look out through arched windows much like the one in this scene. The castle was used as a filming location for Mel Gibson's 1995 film Braveheart. Guided tours run from Easter through October, and the surrounding parkland is free to wander year-round.
