An Italian Design Built For America

Ram introduced the ProMaster for the 2014 model year as an American version of the Fiat Ducato, a European cargo van design that had already been on sale overseas since the 1980s. Ram builds the US-spec version at the Saltillo Van Assembly Plant in Mexico.

Front-Wheel Drive Changes The Floor

Unlike the rear-wheel-drive Ford Transit or Chevy Express, the ProMaster sends power to the front wheels. That layout removes the raised driveshaft tunnel from the cargo area, giving delivery drivers and camper-van builders one of the lowest, flattest floors available in a full-size van.

Three Roof Heights, One Van Family

Buyers can spec the ProMaster in low, high, and super-high roof configurations, plus several wheelbase lengths, stretching total cargo volume up to roughly 460 cubic feet on the longest version. That range is why the same van shows up as a delivery truck, a plumber's rig, and a camper conversion.

A Facelift For 2019

Ram updated the ProMaster's front fascia, headlights, and safety technology for the 2019 model year, adding available blind-spot monitoring and a reworked dashboard while keeping the boxy proportions that make the van so easy to load from either side.

A Smaller Sibling Joined In 2015

Ram also sells the ProMaster City, a compact van built on a car-based platform, alongside the full-size ProMaster. The two share a name and a brand but almost nothing else, giving Ram a cargo van for both small parcel routes and full pallet loads.

A Diesel Option, Then Gas Only

Ram offered the ProMaster with a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 alongside its standard gas V6 from 2014 through 2019, giving fleet buyers a fuel-efficient option for long delivery routes. Ram dropped the diesel afterward and now builds the ProMaster exclusively with gas V6 power, simplifying the lineup for both delivery fleets and van-conversion shops.

A Favorite For Camper Conversions

The ProMaster's flat floor, tall roof options, and wide door openings have made it one of the most popular vans for do-it-yourself camper builds, alongside the Mercedes Sprinter and Ford Transit. Builders can stand up inside the high-roof version without stooping, a rare feature that turned a delivery van into a road-trip home for thousands of owners.

One Design, Many Badges

The ProMaster shares its basic body and platform with vans sold overseas as the Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxer, and Citroen Jumper, all built from the same underlying design developed by Fiat and PSA. Ram's version simply wears different badges and a few US-specific parts, making the ProMaster part of one of the widest-reaching commercial van platforms in the world.

Payload Built For Fleets

A properly equipped ProMaster can carry more than 5,000 pounds of payload depending on configuration, a number that puts it ahead of many rival vans and explains why parcel delivery fleets and utility companies buy the ProMaster by the thousands. That capacity, combined with the low step-in height, makes loading and unloading faster for drivers running dozens of stops a day.
