The Oldest Sharks on Earth

Sharks are among the most ancient animals alive today. The earliest shark-like fish appeared roughly 450 million years ago, predating the dinosaurs by more than 200 million years. Sharks have survived five mass extinction events that wiped out most other animal groups. Their cartilage skeleton — lighter and more flexible than bone — is part of why they outlasted so many competitors. Cartilage does not fossilize easily, so most evidence comes from teeth, which sharks shed and replace continuously throughout their lives.

Great White Sharks: Size, Speed, and Senses

The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) is the largest predatory fish in the ocean. Adults typically measure 15 to 20 feet and weigh between 1,500 and 4,000 pounds. Great whites can swim in short bursts up to 25 miles per hour. The streamlined torpedo body, crescent tail, and powerful pectoral fins visible in this coloring page work together: the tail provides propulsive thrust while the pectoral fins act as precise steering planes.

A great white’s sensory toolkit is extraordinary. The lateral line detects pressure waves from distant movement. Electroreceptor organs called ampullae of Lorenzini sense the faint electrical fields from prey muscles. Sharks can detect a single drop of blood diluted in a million parts of water. Their eyes also see in very low light because of a reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum behind the retina — the same structure that makes cat eyes glow in the dark.

Teeth, Jaws, and the Mechanics of a Shark Bite

Great white shark teeth are serrated triangles typically 2 to 3 inches tall. Rows of replacement teeth sit behind the working row, ready to shift forward when a tooth breaks. A single great white may shed 20,000 teeth over its lifetime. The jaw is loosely connected to the skull, allowing it to protrude forward when the shark bites — the wide-open jaws shown in this coloring page represent that classic attack posture. Upper jaw teeth are broader for gripping; lower teeth are narrower and used for cutting.

Dorsal Fins, Pectoral Fins, and How Sharks Swim

The tall dorsal fin visible at the top of the shark stabilizes it and prevents rolling sideways while swimming. The large pectoral fins provide lift, similar to airplane wings — a shark sinks when it stops moving because it lacks a swim bladder. The crescent-shaped tail, called a lunate caudal fin, is a feature shared with tuna and other fast ocean swimmers, generating strong forward thrust with each side-to-side sweep.

Shark Conservation and Ocean Health

Despite their fearsome reputation, great white sharks face serious population pressures. The IUCN lists them as Vulnerable, facing a high risk of extinction without conservation effort. Finning kills tens of millions of sharks per year across all species. Great whites are also threatened by accidental bycatch and a slow reproductive rate: females reach sexual maturity around age 15 and produce only two to ten pups per litter. Healthy shark populations matter because sharks are apex predators that regulate prey populations throughout ocean food webs.
