Snowplow Truck: History & Fun Facts
Early Snow Clearing Before Powered Plows
Before engine-powered plows, towns dragged wooden or metal blades behind teams of horses to push snow off dirt roads, a method that struggled once snowfall got much deeper than a few inches. The first truck-mounted plow blades appeared in the early 1900s once motorized trucks became sturdy enough to push through packed drifts.
How the Angled Blade Clears a Path
The plow blade sits at an angle across the front of the truck rather than straight on, so snow slides off to one side instead of piling up directly in front of the wheels and stalling the truck. Hydraulic arms let the driver raise, lower, and pivot the blade from inside the cab to match changing road conditions block by block.
Salt, Sand, and the Modern Plow Fleet
Many snowplow trucks carry a hopper of rock salt or sand behind the cab that spreads through a spinner as the truck drives, melting ice and adding traction right after the blade clears the loose snow. A single city plow route can cover well over a hundred miles in one shift, running through the night so roads are passable by morning.
