Honda's CB750, released in 1969, is widely credited with kicking off the modern sport bike category by pairing a powerful four-cylinder engine with a front disc brake, a combination almost unheard of on a production motorcycle at the time. Full Fairings Borrowed From the Racetrack

Engineers redesign a sport bike's frame every few model years chasing a lighter overall package, since shedding even a few pounds sharpens acceleration and cornering more than adding extra horsepower ever could. Aluminum twin-spar frames, visible as the two beams running from the steering head back to the swingarm pivot, replaced heavier steel tube frames on most sport bikes by the 1990s.
