What Baby Turkeys Are Called

A baby turkey is called a poult, a term used specifically for young domestic and wild turkeys in the weeks after hatching. Poults are covered in soft down rather than the coarser feathers of an adult turkey, and they stay close to a parent bird for warmth, protection, and guidance while learning to forage.

The word poult comes from the same root as poultry, a general term for domesticated birds raised for eggs or meat, which is why the same word pattern shows up across young chickens, turkeys, and other farm birds.

Wild Turkey Family Behavior

In the wild, a hen turkey leads her poults in a small group called a brood for several weeks after hatching, teaching them to find insects, seeds, and berries on the ground. Poults can fly short distances within just a couple of weeks, which helps them escape predators and reach low tree branches at night well before they are fully grown.

A hen typically hatches between ten and fourteen eggs in a single clutch, though not all poults survive their first few vulnerable weeks, which is why a mother turkey stays especially alert and protective during that early period.

The Tail Fan as a Turkey Signal

A fully fanned tail, shown on the parent turkey in this scene, is most often associated with a male turkey displaying during breeding season, though the shape has become a general visual shorthand for turkeys in illustration regardless of which parent is pictured. The fan is made of stiff tail feathers that spread wide and lock into a rounded shape when the bird tenses specific muscles.

A simple wooden fence is a common backdrop for farm animal scenes because turkeys, along with chickens and other poultry, are often raised in fenced yards or coops to keep them safe from predators. Family-run farms sometimes raise heritage turkey breeds specifically for their appearance and behavior, not only for meat production.

Heritage turkey breeds, unlike the broad-breasted varieties raised commercially for meat, tend to keep more of their natural coloring and behavior, which is why small farms raising them often treat the birds as much for show and breeding as for the table.

Growth From Poult to Adult Turkey

A poult grows quickly, reaching close to adult size within about five to six months, which is part of why turkeys raised for Thanksgiving meals are typically hatched in the spring. Coloring a family group together, rather than a single adult bird, gives children a chance to notice the size difference between a young poult and a fully grown turkey.

That five-to-six month growth window lines up precisely with the calendar gap between a spring hatch and a late-November holiday, which is one of the more practical, less symbolic reasons turkeys became the Thanksgiving bird of choice on many American farms.
