The proportions tell a viewer this is built on a truck frame rather than a car platform.
The Toyota 4Runner went on sale in 1984 in the United States and as the Hilux Surf in Japan. The first generation was effectively a Toyota pickup truck with a fiberglass shell over the bed to turn it into an SUV. That truck-first design is why the 4Runner has stayed body-on-frame for every generation, a rare choice in the modern compact and mid-size SUV class.
The Toyota 4Runner has been an off-road favorite since 1984 thanks to its body-on-frame chassis and TRD off-road trims. Kids can color the boxy SUV in Army Green, Lunar Rock, or any rugged shade to match a real or imagined trail rig.
