A 1938 Origin as a People's Car

Volkswagen began building the original Beetle, known internally as the Type 1, in Germany in 1938, designing it from the start as an affordable, simple car ordinary families could actually own rather than a luxury product built for the wealthy few. Full-scale civilian production did not truly take off until after 1945, when the factory that had been rebuilt following wartime damage began turning out Beetles for a country eager to get back on the road.

An Air-Cooled Engine in the Back

Unlike most cars, the Beetle carried its engine in the rear and cooled it with air instead of a water radiator, a layout that freed up the rounded front hood traced in this outline for a small storage trunk instead of a bulky engine block. That air-cooled engine also meant Beetle owners never had to worry about a radiator freezing or boiling over, a genuine selling point in the days before reliable antifreeze was common in every driveway.

Ferdinand Porsche's Rounded Silhouette

Engineer Ferdinand Porsche shaped the Beetle's smooth dome roofline and curved fenders partly for aerodynamics and partly to keep the steel body simple to stamp, and that same rounded silhouette is the reason the car earned its bug nickname almost as soon as it reached American roads. Porsche later used lessons from the Beetle's simple, sturdy chassis when developing his own sports car company, so the friendly little roadster and the Porsche 911 both trace part of their engineering roots back to the same designer.

Over 21 Million Built on One Design

Volkswagen kept the Beetle in production for more than six decades, building over 21 million examples worldwide before the last classic-shape Beetle rolled off a Mexican assembly line in 2003, a production run that once made it the best-selling single car design in history. Mexican-built Beetles served for years as some of the country's most common taxis, instantly recognizable with their rear doors removed for easier passenger access in crowded city streets.

A Star of 1960s American Counterculture

The Beetle's small size and low price made it a favorite among young American drivers in the 1960s and 1970s, and its friendly rounded shape turned up everywhere from Disney's Herbie films to hand-painted flower designs on college campuses across the country. Advertising agencies of the era leaned into the car's unusual looks rather than hiding them, running famous print campaigns that poked fun at its small size and turned that quirkiness into a badge of honor for owners.

A New Beetle Reborn in 1998

Volkswagen revived the nameplate in 1998 with the New Beetle, a modern front-engine car styled to echo the same rounded dome roofline and round headlights of the original, followed later by an updated Beetle model that ran through 2019 before Volkswagen retired the name again. Even though the mechanical layout moved the engine to the front for the modern versions, designers kept the same instantly readable dome shape traced in this outline so the car stayed recognizable at a glance.
