A 1976 Prototype That Became a Whole Category

Arriving in America as the Rabbit GTI

Volkswagen sold the first-generation hot hatch in the United States badged as the Rabbit GTI starting in 1983, two years before the Golf GTI name itself reached American dealerships, giving US buyers an early taste of the formula before it carried the now-familiar badge. American automotive magazines quickly praised the little Rabbit GTI for out-handling far more expensive sports cars, helping build the reputation the nameplate still carries decades later.

Golf Means Gulf Stream, Not the Sport

Despite the name, Volkswagen's Golf line is named after the Gulf Stream ocean current rather than the sport of golf, continuing a company tradition of naming cars after winds and currents that also produced the Passat, Scirocco, and Jetta. That naming pattern traces back to Volkswagen marketing decisions made in the 1970s, when the company moved away from beetle-era model numbers toward names meant to sound more dynamic on a dealership lot, a shift that also helped separate the fresh new Golf lineup from the air-cooled cars it was gradually replacing.
