Chevrolet Camaro: History & Fun Facts
The Camaro is recognizable because the proportions are pure pony car: a long sculpted hood with strong creases, a fastback roofline that slopes back toward the trunk, narrow eye-shaped headlights flanking a wide split grille, and a low ride height that gives the coupe an aggressive stance.
1966 Launch and the Pony Car War
Chevrolet introduced the Camaro on September 12, 1966, as a 1967 model year, two and a half years after the Ford Mustang sparked the pony-car class. The first Camaro was built on a new F-body platform shared with the Pontiac Firebird, and it was designed specifically to compete with the Mustang on price, performance, and personalization options.
Six Generations and the 2024 End
The Camaro ran across six generations: 1967-1969, 1970-1981, 1982-1992, 1993-2002, then a long pause before returning in 2010 through 2015, with the sixth generation running from 2016 to 2024. Chevrolet ended production in December 2023 and built the final 2024 model-year Camaros in January 2024 - the end of a 57-year nameplate run.
Camaro SS and ZL1 Performance
The sixth-generation Camaro SS used a naturally aspirated 6.2-liter LT1 V8 making 455 horsepower, while the ZL1 trim used a 6.2-liter supercharged LT4 V8 making 650 horsepower - the same engine family used in the Corvette Z06. The ZL1 1LE track package lapped the Nurburgring Nordschleife in 7 minutes 16 seconds, the fastest production muscle car at the time.
Z/28 Heritage and Track Roots
The Z/28 trim has been the track-focused Camaro since 1967, when it was built for Trans-Am racing. The fifth-generation Z/28 returned in 2014 with a 7.0-liter LS7 V8 making 505 horsepower, carbon-ceramic brakes from the Corvette ZR1, and aggressive aerodynamics. Production was deliberately limited to keep it as the most extreme road Camaro built.
NASCAR, Trans-Am, and Bumblebee
Camaros have raced in NASCAR Cup competition since the 2018 season, replacing the Chevrolet SS as Chevrolet's stock-car body shape. The Camaro also competed in Trans-Am, IMSA GT4 racing, and various drag classes. In pop culture, the Camaro played Bumblebee in the Transformers movies starting in 2007, which introduced the car to a much younger audience.
Smooth Body for Color Choices
A Camaro outline gives kids long uninterrupted body panels that respond well to single-color fills, plus a wide split grille that can become a focus for darker shading. The fastback roof, the front splitter, and the five-spoke wheels each give older children places to add their own touches once the main body color is in place.
