Chevy Corvette Stingray: History & Fun Facts

Chevrolet first used the Sting Ray name in 1963 on the second-generation Corvette, a split-window coupe with a sharklike snout. The two words merged into one in 1969, then the badge disappeared for four full generations before Chevy brought it back in 2014 as the base trim on the C7.

The First Mid-Engine Corvette

The current C8-generation Stingray reached dealers in February 2020 as a 2020 model, ending nearly 70 years of front-engine Corvettes. A 495-Horsepower Small-Block

A Name That Predates the Car by a Century

Sting Ray borrowed its name from the ocean fish, chosen by designers who wanted a shape that looked fast standing still. Chevrolet's design team reportedly studied a real stingray at a research aquarium before finalizing the second-generation Corvette's pointed nose and tapered tail, a design language that still echoes faintly in the C8's sharp front fender creases.

Chevrolet assembles every Stingray at the Bowling Green Assembly plant in Kentucky, where a museum next door displays historic Corvettes from every generation back to 1953. The plant also runs factory delivery tours, letting new owners pick up their car in person and watch part of the build process.
