Dodge Challenger Hellcat: History & Fun Facts
The Challenger Hellcat is recognizable because the proportions are pure muscle car: a long flat hood with a center scoop, a low fastback roofline, a wide stance over fat rear tires, and a split grille that hides quad round headlights behind it. The outline reads as 'fast' before any words are added.
1970 Original Challenger and 2008 Revival
The first Dodge Challenger ran from 1970 to 1974 as a two-door E-body muscle car. Dodge revived the nameplate in 2008 with a third-generation Challenger that copied the original's wide stance, recessed grille, and quad round headlights. That retro shape stayed mostly unchanged through 2023, which is unusual for a modern production car.
Supercharged 6.2L HEMI Power
The SRT Hellcat trim debuted for 2015 with a 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V8 producing 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. That made the Challenger Hellcat one of the most powerful muscle cars ever sold from a factory, and it briefly held the title of the most powerful production V8 in any American sedan or coupe.
Redeye, Super Stock, and Demon Trims
Higher Hellcat trims pushed output further. The Redeye made 797 horsepower, the Super Stock made 807 horsepower with drag radial tires, and the limited 2018 Demon hit 808 horsepower on pump gas or 840 horsepower on race gas - the first factory production car certified to lift the front wheels off the strip during a launch.
Quarter-Mile and Track Records
A stock Challenger SRT Demon was rated to run the quarter-mile in 9.65 seconds at 140 mph from the factory. It became the first production car the NHRA banned from competition without a roll cage because of how quickly it could leave the line. Even the regular Hellcat could clear the quarter-mile in about 11.2 seconds.
End of the LC Platform in 2023
Dodge ended the long-running LC-platform Challenger after the 2023 model year, marking the close of factory-built American gasoline muscle cars with V8 power at that scale. Final Last Call special editions used the supercharged HEMI in one last run. The Challenger nameplate later returned in electric form on the new STLA Large platform.
Outline Friendly to Big Color Blocks
The Challenger Hellcat outline is built from large flat panels - the long hood, the roof, the doors, and the wide rear quarters - which gives kids plenty of room for a single bold body color. Smaller features like the center hood scoop and round headlights become natural detail areas after the big panels are done.
