The Final Year of a Two-Year Face

Dodge sold the second-generation Charger from 1968 through 1970, but gave the 1970 model a new loop-style front bumper and grille design distinct from the 1968 and 1969 cars, wrapping the bumper directly into the grille opening for a smoother, more unified nose. That new face makes the 1970 Charger the easiest of the three model years to identify at a glance, even though all three share the same basic body shape underneath.

Hidden Headlights by Design

Dodge engineers built vacuum-operated flip panels into the grille so the 1970 Charger's headlights stay completely hidden until switched on, a styling trick borrowed from expensive European sports cars of the era and rare on an affordable American muscle car. That hidden-headlight face gave the Charger a cleaner, more aggressive look than rivals with plain exposed headlight buckets.

426 HEMI and 440 Six Pack Power

The 1970 Charger offered two legendary high-performance engines at the top of its lineup: the 426 cubic inch HEMI V8, originally built for NASCAR homologation, and the 440 cubic inch Six Pack V8, which used three two-barrel carburetors stacked in a row for extra top-end airflow. Both engines turned an already quick coupe into one of the fastest cars sold to the public that year.

A Coke-Bottle Body Shape

The Charger's body flares outward sharply over the rear wheels before tucking back in at the trunk, a silhouette designers nicknamed the coke-bottle shape for its resemblance to the classic glass bottle profile. That flared rear haunch became one of the most copied design cues in American muscle-car styling through the early 1970s.

A Television and Movie Star

A 1969 Charger became famous as the General Lee in the television show The Dukes of Hazzard, sharing the same hidden-headlight face and coke-bottle body as the 1970 model on this page. A 1968 Charger also played the villain's car chased by a Mustang in the famous 1968 film Bullitt, cementing the second-generation Charger's reputation on screen as much as on the street.

NASCAR Roots and Aero Spinoffs

Dodge built the Charger 500 and later the wing-equipped Charger Daytona directly off this second-generation body specifically to compete at NASCAR's fastest superspeedways, smoothing the grille and adding a tall rear wing to cut wind resistance above 200 miles per hour. Those aero specials remain some of the most valuable and recognizable muscle cars from the entire era.

Full-Width Taillights

The 1970 Charger carried a wide taillight panel stretching almost the full width of the rear end, a design element that echoed the split-grille theme up front and gave the car a matching light signature from both ends. That rear panel treatment is one more detail collectors use to date a Charger to the 1968-1970 body style at a glance, since Dodge redesigned the taillights again when the third generation arrived for 1971 with a fresh set of round-and-rectangle lamp clusters and a completely different rear bumper shape that no longer matched the earlier three model years at all.
