Dodge Charger: History & Fun Facts
The Charger is recognizable for a long flat hood, a wide split grille that wraps almost the full width of the front, narrow recessed headlights, a low roofline, and a stance that looks lower at the front than the rear. Those proportions tell a viewer right away that this car was built around a big engine.
1966 Launch and Coronet Roots
The Dodge Charger debuted in 1966 as a fastback coupe built on the Coronet platform. It was Dodge's answer to the muscle-car wave kicked off by the Pontiac GTO and Ford Mustang. The second-generation 1968-1970 Charger - with its hidden headlights and Coke-bottle body - is the version most fans picture and the same shape that starred in the General Lee from the Dukes of Hazzard television show.
Hellcat and Redeye Power Era
From 2015 onward the Charger SRT Hellcat used a 6.2-liter supercharged HEMI V8 making 707 horsepower, and the Hellcat Redeye trim pushed it to 797 horsepower. The Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye Jailbreak edition went further still at 807 horsepower, making the Charger one of the most powerful production four-door cars ever sold to the public.
The Only Four-Door Muscle Car
Modern Chargers stood out because they were sold only as four-door sedans even though the rest of the muscle-car class (Mustang, Camaro, Challenger) stayed two-door. That made the Charger a practical family car that could still run 11-second quarter-mile times in Hellcat trim - a combination almost no other sedan offered.
Daytona EV and the 2024 Reboot
Dodge ended the gasoline LX-platform Charger in 2023 after a long production run. The new 2024 Charger Daytona is built on the Stellantis STLA Large platform and is offered as a fully electric muscle car with up to 670 horsepower in the Scat Pack trim. A gas-powered 3.0-liter twin-turbo Hurricane straight-six version was added later for buyers who still want a combustion engine.
Police, NASCAR, and Drag Racing
Chargers were the most common American police pursuit sedans for years thanks to a strong Pentastar V6 base engine and an available 5.7-liter HEMI V8 making 370 horsepower. The Charger also raced in NASCAR Cup competition and in NHRA drag classes, giving the nameplate a long record on ovals and quarter-mile strips.
Why the Shape Works for Coloring
A Charger outline gives kids long horizontal lines to follow - the hood, the door tops, and the roofline run almost straight across the page. Younger colorists can fill the body in a single shade, while older kids can sketch racing stripes, a Mopar scallop, or contrasting wheels to match a favorite real-world trim like Hellcat or R/T.
