Forklift: History & Fun Facts
From Hand Trucks to Powered Lifting
Before powered forklifts, warehouse workers moved heavy crates by hand truck or by rolling them on logs, a slow process that limited how quickly goods could move through a factory. The first gasoline- and electric-powered forklifts appeared in the early 1900s and quickly became essential once wooden shipping pallets standardized how goods were stacked.
How the Counterweight Keeps the Machine From Tipping
A heavy metal block bolted into the rear of the frame balances out the weight of a loaded pallet lifted high on the front forks, acting like the short end of a seesaw holding up a much longer end. Without that counterweight, lifting even a modest load would pull the whole machine forward and topple it.
The Pallet That Changed Shipping Forever
The standardized wooden pallet, widely adopted during World War Two to speed up military supply loading, gave forklifts a uniform shape to lift and stack every time. That pairing of pallet and forklift cut loading times so dramatically that it reshaped how warehouses, ports, and factories move goods worldwide to this day.
