Piaggio, an Italian company that had built aircraft parts during World War II, designed its first scooter in 1946 out of leftover factory tooling meant for cheap, simple transportation in a country with bombed-out roads and little spare cash. The engineer behind the design reportedly said the finished shape looked like a wasp, and the Italian word for wasp, vespa, became the scooter's lasting name.

That first scooter sold for a fraction of the price of a car, putting personal transportation within reach of ordinary families rebuilding their lives after the war.

A Body Built in One Piece

Unlike a motorcycle frame with an engine bolted on top, a classic scooter uses a single steel monocoque shell that forms the floorboard, leg shield, and body panels all in one welded piece, the smooth integrated panel drawn on this coloring page. That enclosed body kept road grime and engine grease off a rider's clothes, a detail that made scooters especially popular with commuters riding to work in regular clothing.

The flat floorboard between the seat and the leg shield lets a rider step through the frame instead of swinging a leg over a tall seat, which is exactly why this style earned the name step-through scooter.

Small Wheels, Big Advantage

Scooter wheels are noticeably smaller than motorcycle wheels, often under a foot across, because the engine and storage sit inside the body rather than beside a large wheel hub. Smaller wheels also lower the scooter's center of gravity, making it easier for new riders to balance at low speed through crowded city streets.

A rounded leg shield at the front, wrapping around the rider's knees and shins, blocks wind and splashing water that a motorcycle's exposed front end lets right through.

From Roman Streets to Mod Culture

Scooters spread quickly through Italy in the 1950s, then crossed into Britain, where young riders in the 1960s adopted them as a symbol of the sharp-dressed Mod subculture, often decorating their scooters with extra mirrors and chrome trim. Films and photographs from that era cemented the scooter as much a fashion statement as a mode of transportation.

Scooters remain a common everyday vehicle in cities worldwide today, prized for parking easily in tight spaces and sipping far less fuel than a car on a short commute.

Storage Hidden Inside the Body

Many step-through scooters hide a small storage compartment underneath the seat, just large enough for a helmet or a bag of groceries, a detail the enclosed monocoque body makes possible that a motorcycle frame simply cannot match. That hidden cargo space became one of the scooter's biggest selling points for commuters running errands around a crowded city.

A round headlight centered above the front wheel and small circular mirrors on short stalks give the scooter its friendly, rounded look, a shape that has barely changed since the very first models rolled out of Italian factories. Automatic transmissions became standard on scooters decades before most motorcycles offered one, letting a rider twist the throttle and go without ever touching a clutch lever or shifting a gear.
