Jeep Gladiator: History & Fun Facts
The Gladiator is recognizable because it shares the Wrangler's front end - the seven-slot grille, the round headlights, the square fender flares - but then continues into a pickup bed instead of a closed SUV body. The outline reads as 'Wrangler plus truck bed,' which is exactly what Jeep built.
2020 Launch and the Wrangler JL Platform
The current Jeep Gladiator went on sale in 2019 as a 2020 model year, the first Jeep pickup since the Comanche left the market in 1992. It is built on a lengthened Wrangler JL platform - the cab and front end share most parts with the Wrangler four-door - which is why the two trucks look so similar from the front.
Original Gladiator Pickup From 1962
The Gladiator name first appeared in 1962 on a full-size Jeep pickup built by Kaiser Jeep. That original Gladiator was sold from 1962 to 1971 and then continued under the J-series name through 1988. The 2020 Gladiator revival borrowed the name to connect the new midsize pickup back to that long Jeep truck history.
3.6L Pentastar V6 and 7,650 lb Towing
The Gladiator uses the same 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 making 285 horsepower as the Wrangler, with an optional 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 in earlier model years making 442 lb-ft of torque. The Gladiator can tow up to 7,650 pounds and carry up to 1,700 pounds of payload - figures that put it ahead of many midsize-pickup rivals.
Rubicon Trim and Removable Doors
Gladiator Rubicon trims add the same off-road hardware as the Wrangler Rubicon: front and rear locking differentials, a disconnecting front sway bar, 33-inch all-terrain tires, and Rock-Trac four-wheel drive. Both the doors and the roof are removable, and the windshield folds down - features no other modern midsize pickup offers from the factory.
Mojave Trim and High-Speed Desert Use
The Gladiator Mojave trim is built for high-speed desert driving rather than low-speed rock crawling. It adds Fox internal-bypass shocks, a one-inch front lift, hydraulic jounce bumpers, and a heavy-duty Dana 44 front axle. It is the only Jeep model to carry the Desert Rated badge in addition to or instead of the Trail Rated badge.
A Two-Subject Coloring Page
The Gladiator outline is essentially two coloring subjects in one - the recognizable Wrangler front end on the left and an open pickup bed on the right. Kids can pick one color for the cab and a different shade for the bed, or treat the truck as a whole and decorate the tailgate with stickers, a license-plate sketch, or cargo drawings.
