Medieval bestiaries described the unicorn as a creature whose horn had the power to cleanse poisoned water. The legend held that when a serpent fouled a forest stream, woodland animals would wait at the bank until a unicorn arrived and dipped its horn in, drawing out the venom so that all could drink safely. This image of the unicorn as a purifier appeared in the writing of Ctesias of Cnidus around 400 BCE, traveled through Latin translations into medieval Europe, and was repeated in texts from the Physiologus to Hildegard of Bingen's twelfth-century work on natural medicine. The association between the horn and healing power made the unicorn a natural symbol of purity and divine protection throughout the medieval world.

Stars, Celestial Symbols, and Unicorn Mythology

Stars and celestial imagery were woven into unicorn mythology from early on. It is the most common and prestigious position for any creature on a coat of arms because it communicates active power, readiness, and nobility rather than passive standing. Scotland adopted the unicorn as its royal heraldic beast in the twelfth century during the reign of William I, and by the fifteenth century the rampant unicorn appeared on the royal seal chained — a deliberate symbol of the immense power being held in check by royal authority. When King James VI of Scotland became James I of England in 1603, the rampant Scottish unicorn joined the rampant English lion on the royal coat of arms, where both animals remain today.

Five-Pointed Stars and Their Place in Fantasy Tradition

The five-pointed star has appeared in art and decoration for at least five thousand years. Mesopotamian astronomers used it as a symbol for the planet Venus because Venus traces a near-perfect five-pointed star pattern in the sky over an eight-year cycle when its positions at inferior conjunction are plotted on a star chart. In medieval Christian art the five-pointed star sometimes appeared in scenes of miraculous light to indicate divine presence. By the time fantasy illustration became a distinct genre in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the five-pointed star had accumulated so many associations with wonder, celestial order, and magic that it became the default shorthand for any scene requiring a sense of enchantment.
