A Name Built From Its Own Engineering

Subaru spelled out the name BRZ from its own engineering goals: Boxer engine, Rear-wheel drive, and Zenith, a Latin-rooted word for the peak or high point Subaru wanted the coupe's driving feel to reach. Few car names double as an engineering checklist quite so literally.

Co-Developed With Toyota

Subaru and Toyota jointly developed the first BRZ, which arrived in United States showrooms for the 2013 model year alongside its badge-engineered twin, the Toyota 86, sharing a chassis while wearing different styling and grille details. The partnership let both companies split development costs on a low-volume sports car neither could easily justify building alone.

A Rare Rear-Wheel-Drive Subaru

Built at Subaru's Gunma Plant

Subaru builds the BRZ at its main manufacturing complex in Gunma, Japan, the same region where the company has assembled its passenger cars for decades, alongside other performance-focused Subaru models. Skilled line workers hand-fit many of the coupe's body panels rather than relying entirely on automation.

A Second Generation With More Power

Subaru launched the second-generation BRZ for the 2022 model year, enlarging the boxer engine to add meaningfully more horsepower than the original while keeping the low hood line and long-nose, short-tail proportions traced in this artwork. The bigger engine finally answered owner complaints that the first-generation car needed more punch out of slow corners.
