Tesla Model 3: History & Fun Facts
The Model 3 is recognizable because the front has no grille - electric cars do not need one - so the fascia stays smooth and unbroken. The body is one long aerodynamic curve from the front to the rear, with a glass roof that flows almost continuously and door handles that sit flush with the body.
2017 Launch and the Mass-Market Mission
Tesla unveiled the Model 3 in March 2016 and began deliveries in July 2017. It was the first Tesla designed from the start to be a mass-market electric car, with a base price near $35,000 at launch - much lower than the earlier Model S and Model X. Tesla had taken over 500,000 reservations within months of the unveiling.
Best-Selling EV in the World
By 2021 the Model 3 became the best-selling electric vehicle in the world, the first electric car to pass one million global sales, and the top-selling premium car in many European markets. It led the global EV sales chart for several years before being passed by the larger Model Y.
Dual-Motor AWD and 0-60 in 2.9 Seconds
Model 3 trims include rear-wheel-drive Standard Range, dual-motor all-wheel-drive Long Range, and the Performance trim. The Performance version uses two motors making a combined output that lets it accelerate from zero to 60 mph in about 2.9 seconds with the Track Mode hardware - close to supercar territory in a four-door family sedan.
The Highland Refresh
Tesla refreshed the Model 3 in late 2023 with the Highland update. Changes included slimmer headlights, a smoother front fascia, a quieter cabin with new sound insulation, eight-inch rear screen, and ventilated front seats. The refresh kept the basic body shape but updated the lights, the interior, and the suspension tuning.
Autopilot, Full Self-Driving, and OTA Updates
Every Model 3 ships with Autopilot driver-assist hardware, with optional Enhanced Autopilot and Full Self-Driving capability sold as software upgrades. Tesla's over-the-air update system lets the Model 3 change features, fix bugs, and improve performance after the car is sold - rare in the auto industry at the scale Tesla uses.
Coloring an Electric Car
A Model 3 outline is a chance to teach kids about a car that runs only on batteries. The smooth body is friendly to single-color fills, and the missing front grille is a great talking point - the front of an electric car looks different on purpose because it does not need to take in air to cool a gasoline engine.
