Beetle owner clubs formed across dozens of countries as the car's simple mechanicals made it easy to repair almost anywhere, and off-road builders even stripped down old Beetles into lightweight desert racers nicknamed Baja Bugs, stripping off fenders and body panels to save weight for rough desert terrain.
