A Concept Car That Became Real

Dodge first showed the Viper as a concept pacing the 1991 Indianapolis 500, and the reaction was strong enough that the production RT/10 roadster reached dealers for the 1992 model year with almost the same wild proportions as the show car.

An Engine Borrowed From A Truck

The original Viper's 8.0-liter V10 traces its roots to a Dodge Ram truck engine, reworked with an aluminum block and heads by Lamborghini engineers, who Chrysler owned at the time. That truck-derived V10 gave the first Viper 400 horsepower in a car with no power steering, no anti-lock brakes, and barely any weather protection.

Five Distinct Generations

The Viper went through five generations between 1992 and 2017: the original SR I roadster, the SR II generation that added a hardtop GTS coupe in 1996, the redesigned ZB I of 2003-2006, the ZB II of 2008-2010, and the final VX-generation SRT Viper sold from 2013 through 2017.

Side Pipes Became A Signature Look

Early Vipers routed their exhaust out through pipes low on the rocker panels just ahead of the rear wheels instead of out the back of the car, a styling cue that stuck with the nameplate for most of its run and remains one of the easiest ways to identify a Viper at a glance.

Built By Hand In Detroit

Every Viper came off the line at the Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit, a small dedicated factory where workers hand-built each car in far smaller numbers than mainstream Dodge models. Production ended in 2017, closing out one of the last American V10 sports cars sold to the public.

A Race Car Version Too

Dodge and its partners built Viper GTS-R race cars that competed at Le Mans and other endurance events, winning their GT class multiple times between 1998 and 2000. Those race results helped cement the Viper's reputation as more than just a straight-line muscle car.

The Track-Focused ACR

Dodge sold an ACR (American Club Racer) version of the Viper aimed squarely at track days, with a massive rear wing, stiffer suspension, and a custom aerodynamics package. The final-generation ACR set multiple production-car lap records at road courses across the country before Viper production ended for good.

A Snake-Themed Name And Graphics

Dodge leaned into the Viper name with optional snake-eye headlight graphics and available double racing stripes running front to back, a look borrowed straight from classic American muscle cars. Those stripes became almost as recognizable as the car's long hood and remain a favorite detail for anyone coloring in a Viper today.

A Bare-Bones First Roadster

The original 1992 RT/10 skipped luxuries most buyers took for granted, including exterior door handles, roll-up windows, and even a real convertible top, using simple snap-in side curtains instead. That stripped-down approach kept weight low and made every early Viper feel closer to a race car than an everyday commuter, with a cabin that prioritized the engine and the road over comfort features rival sports cars offered as standard.
