Scuderia Ferrari's 90th Anniversary Name

Ferrari unveiled the SF90 Stradale in May 2019 and named it for the 90th anniversary of Scuderia Ferrari, the racing team Enzo Ferrari founded in 1929, seven years before the first road cars carrying his own name appeared.

Naming a road car directly after the racing division was a deliberate statement. Ferrari wanted the SF90 to read as the most track-derived road car the company had built up to that point.

Ferrari's First Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain

The SF90 pairs a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with three electric motors and a plug-in battery pack, for a combined output Ferrari lists at 986 horsepower. It was the first Ferrari road car that could be charged from a wall outlet.

That hybrid layout let Ferrari chase two goals at once: a 0-60 mph time under 2.5 seconds, and a short-range electric-only mode quiet enough for early morning street driving.

Three Electric Motors and All-Wheel Drive

Two of the SF90's electric motors sit at the front axle, one per wheel, giving the car all-wheel drive for the first time in a Ferrari road model. The third motor sits between the engine and gearbox in back.

Splitting torque independently between the two front wheels lets the car adjust power delivery corner by corner, something a purely mechanical all-wheel-drive system can't do as precisely.

The Assetto Fiorano Package

Ferrari offers an optional Assetto Fiorano package on the SF90, named for the company's private Fiorano test track. It adds lighter wheels, multimatic shock absorbers borrowed from motorsport, and extra carbon fiber trim to cut weight.

The package trims roughly 30 kilograms from the car while stiffening the suspension for faster lap times, at the cost of a firmer ride on rough public roads.

An Active Rear Wing for Ferrari

The tall wing traced in this outline isn't fixed. Ferrari calls the system Shut-Off Gurney, and it changes the wing's rear profile to add downforce under braking and hard cornering, then reduces drag again on a straight.

It marked the first time Ferrari had put an active rear aerodynamic device on a series-production road car, following ideas the company had already used in Formula 1.

The SF90 Spider Convertible

Ferrari later added a folding hard-top Spider version of the SF90, keeping the same hybrid V8 powertrain and all-wheel drive while adding a retractable roof panel that stows behind the seats.

Both the coupe and Spider share the wide side intakes and low nose shown in this outline, proof that the aerodynamic shape mattered as much to Ferrari's engineers as the roof design.

A Flagship Above the Mid-Engine Ferrari Lineup

When it launched, the SF90 sat above the 296 GTB and the F8 Tributo as Ferrari's fastest and most powerful mid-engine road car, a position it still holds within the current lineup. Ferrari also built a small run of SF90 XX variants aimed purely at track driving, stripped of some road comforts in favor of extra downforce and a sharper exhaust note.

That flagship role means the SF90 carries technology, like the front electric motors and active aero, that eventually trickles down into smaller Ferrari models over the following years. Engineers at Maranello have described the hybrid system as a proving ground for future road cars rather than a one-off experiment.
