McLaren P1: History & Fun Facts

One of the Holy Trinity Hypercars

McLaren built the P1 from 2013 to 2015, releasing it alongside the Ferrari LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder. Enthusiasts and journalists nicknamed the three cars the Holy Trinity of hybrid hypercars, and they are still compared and debated by fans today.

All three used electric motors paired with a combustion engine, and all three arrived within about a year of each other, making 2013 a landmark year for high-performance hybrid technology reaching road cars rather than staying confined to racing prototypes.

A Formula 1 Style DRS Button

The P1 borrowed a real Formula 1 idea: a Drag Reduction System button on the steering wheel that flattens the rear wing's angle on a straight to cut drag, then restores full downforce for the next corner.

McLaren's Formula 1 team had used similar rear-wing systems on its race cars, and putting a version of it on a road-legal hypercar let owners feel a piece of grand prix engineering firsthand, right down to the same button-press logic drivers use on the grand prix grid.

375 Examples Built From 2013 to 2015

McLaren limited P1 production to exactly 375 units worldwide, a number the company chose deliberately to keep the car rare and to match demand it had already gauged from serious buyers before production began.

Every P1 sold out before the final car left the factory in Woking, England, and low production numbers have kept resale prices well above the original sticker price ever since.

Race Mode and a Dropped Ride Height

Selecting Race mode on the P1 lowers the car's ride height and stiffens the suspension for maximum grip, changing its stance and aerodynamic balance noticeably compared to normal road driving.

That dramatic drop, combined with the active rear wing, gave the P1 a track-ready aerodynamic setup that most owners never touched on public roads but could access at a moment's notice with a single dashboard control.

The Track-Only P1 GTR

In 2015, McLaren released the P1 GTR, a track-only version stripped of number plates, mufflers, and road-legal equipment, with a wider body, a fixed racing seat setup, and a power boost to roughly 986 horsepower.

The GTR was never meant for public roads. McLaren sold it directly to existing P1 owners for use at private track days, continuing a tradition of extreme GTR variants tied to the brand's racing heritage and its Formula 1 program.

A Successor Decades in the Making

The P1 helped set McLaren's direction toward hybrid hypercars, a path the company continued years later with its next-generation flagship models built around similar electrified powertrains.

For many young car fans, the P1's dramatic wing and low stance remain one of the clearest examples of how a hybrid powertrain and aggressive aerodynamics can work together instead of competing with each other.

Carbon Fiber Construction From the Monocage

Like every modern McLaren road car, the P1 is built around a central carbon fiber structure, in this case called the MonoCage, which forms the passenger safety cell and keeps the car's weight remarkably low for its power output.

That carbon tub let McLaren add a heavy battery pack and electric motor for the hybrid system without pushing the P1's overall weight far past that of purely gasoline-powered rivals from the same era.
