Bugatti Veyron: History & Fun Facts

The 2005 Return of a Sleeping Name

Bugatti had not built a production car in decades when the Veyron 16.4 finally reached customers in 2005, after Volkswagen bought the dormant brand in 1998 and spent seven years developing the car from a concept first shown in 1999.

Engineers reportedly went through four different chief designers and multiple prototype layouts before settling on the mid-engine shape traced in this outline, a sign of how hard the small team worked to get the concept road-legal.

A Quad-Turbo W16 Engine

Instead of a V8 or V12, the Veyron uses a W16 engine, essentially two narrow-angle V8s joined at the crankshaft, fed by four turbochargers. The layout crammed 8.0 liters and 16 cylinders into a space not much larger than a conventional V12.

That packaging let Bugatti fit an engine producing over 1,000 horsepower into a mid-engine chassis without stretching the wheelbase to unmanageable length, keeping the car's proportions close to a conventional supercar.

Ten Radiators to Keep It Cool

A W16 engine making that much power generates enormous heat, so Bugatti built the Veyron with 10 separate radiators and heat exchangers tucked around the body, several of them hidden inside the large intakes behind the doors shown in this outline.

Without that much cooling capacity, the engine couldn't sustain its top-speed run for more than a few minutes before overheating, so the radiator count was not a luxury detail but a hard engineering requirement.

The First 250 MPH Production Car

In 2005, the standard Veyron reached a top speed of 253 mph, making it the first street-legal production car verified to cross the 250 mph mark. A special key had to be turned to unlock the highest speed setting, which also lowered the car's ride height automatically.

That top-speed run required a specially reinforced tire developed with Michelin, since ordinary high-performance tires were never designed to survive sustained speeds anywhere near that number.

The Super Sport's World Record

Bugatti later released the Veyron Super Sport, which set a Guinness World Record in 2010 for the fastest production car at 267.8 mph, a title that stood for years before newer hypercars eventually surpassed it.

Guinness capped the officially recognized record slightly below the car's true top speed for safety reasons, but the Super Sport's run still stood as a benchmark that rival hypercar makers spent the next decade chasing.

A Horseshoe Grille Tracing Back to the 1920s

The rounded horseshoe-shaped grille opening on the Veyron's nose is a direct callback to Bugatti's original race cars from the 1920s and 1930s, designed by founder Ettore Bugatti, whose cars dominated Grand Prix racing in that era.

Carrying that shape onto a modern hypercar tied the Veyron's identity to nearly a century of Bugatti history, rather than treating the car as a brand-new design with no connection to the company's racing past.

Handing the Torch to the Chiron

Bugatti built 450 Veyrons between 2005 and 2015 across coupe and open-top Grand Sport versions before ending production and replacing it with the Chiron, a successor that kept the W16 engine but pushed power and speed even further.

Even after the Chiron took over, the Veyron's engineering choices, from the multiple radiators to the quad-turbo W16 layout, set the template that Bugatti's later hypercars have followed ever since.
