Renamed From Suburban to Yukon XL

GMC actually sold its long-wheelbase full-size SUV under the Suburban name through the 1999 model year, matching Chevrolet's badge. Starting with the 2000 model year, GMC renamed its version Yukon XL to fold it under the growing Yukon family, while Chevrolet kept the Suburban name it had trademarked since the 1930s. That switch means the Yukon XL and the Chevy Suburban are close mechanical twins, but only one of them still carries the industry's oldest continuously used vehicle nameplate.

Roughly 14 Inches of Extra Wheelbase

The Yukon XL stretches the standard Yukon's wheelbase by about 14 inches, most of which goes toward third-row legroom and cargo space behind the last seat. Where a standard Yukon holds roughly 25 cubic feet behind the third row, the XL nearly doubles that figure, making it one of the few SUVs that can carry nine passengers and their luggage at the same time without a rooftop cargo box.

Four Generations Since the Rename

Since adopting the Yukon XL name, the truck has gone through generations lining up with the standard Yukon: 2000-2006, 2007-2014, 2015-2020, and 2021 to the present. Independent rear suspension arrived for the 2015 redesign, smoothing the ride over the long wheelbase and freeing up floor space for the fold-flat third row that later trucks use.

A Favorite for Towing and Big Families

The extra length does not come at the cost of towing muscle. A properly equipped Yukon XL can pull close to 8,000 pounds, and its longer bed floor behind the third row swallows strollers, camping gear, and sports equipment that a standard-length SUV simply can't fit. Denali and AT4 trims carry over from the regular Yukon, so buyers can still choose between a chrome-heavy family hauler and an off-road-ready XL with all-terrain tires and a suspension lift.

Spotting the XL Next to a Standard Yukon

The clearest visual cue is the extra rear overhang and fourth side window; a standard Yukon has three side windows per side, while the XL adds a fourth toward the back. The roofline also runs noticeably longer before it kicks down to the rear glass.
