Reviving a Retired Nameplate as an EV

General Motors discontinued the original gas-powered Hummer brand in 2010, but the name returned in October 2020 as the GMC Hummer EV, a fully electric pickup built at GM's Factory Zero plant in Detroit. GMC kept the blocky, flat-paneled look people remembered from the military-derived Humvee and civilian H1 and H2, but rebuilt everything underneath around a skateboard-style battery pack and electric motors instead of a gas V8.

Three Motors and Four-Digit Horsepower

The top Edition 1 Hummer EV pickup uses three electric motors, one for the front axle and two for the rear, producing GM's advertised 1,000 horsepower figure. That output launches a nearly 9,000-pound truck from zero to 60 mph in about three seconds, a genuinely startling number for a vehicle roughly the size and weight of a heavy-duty pickup.

Crab Walk and Extreme Off-Road Tricks

GMC built a party trick into the Hummer EV called Crab Walk, which turns all four wheels in the same direction so the truck can drive diagonally, handy for squeezing out of tight trail spots. Off-road-focused trims also come with adjustable air suspension that raises ground clearance for rock crawling, echoing the extreme capability the Hummer name built its reputation on decades earlier.

SUV Version Joins the Pickup

GMC expanded the lineup in 2023 with a Hummer EV SUV, a shorter body style built on the same electric platform as the pickup but with a fully enclosed cargo area instead of an open bed. Both versions share the same slab-sided, upright design language, chunky wheel arches, and massive off-road tires that make the Hummer EV instantly recognizable next to more rounded modern trucks.

A Battery Pack the Size of Two Sedans

The Hummer EV's battery pack holds roughly 200 kWh of energy in its largest configuration, more than double what most electric sedans carry, which is part of why the truck weighs so much despite having no engine block or transmission. That massive battery gives the Hummer EV an EPA-estimated range over 300 miles, letting it cover real truck-sized road trips despite its size and weight.

Built at Factory Zero in Detroit

GM builds the Hummer EV at its Factory Zero plant in Detroit and Hamtramck, a facility GM converted specifically for electric truck and SUV production. The plant also demonstrates GM's Ultium battery platform, the same modular battery and motor architecture underpinning several other GM electric vehicles. Pricing for the Hummer EV starts well above a typical half-ton pickup, reflecting both the size of its battery pack and the specialty, low-volume nature of the truck compared to GM's mainstream gas-powered lineup. A launch mode GMC calls Watts to Freedom locks the suspension, motors, and traction control into their most aggressive settings for a few seconds, letting the driver unleash the truck's full acceleration on demand rather than every time the accelerator is pressed hard. GMC also fits a household-style power outlet in the bed on some trims, letting owners run tools or a small appliance straight off the truck's massive battery pack at a campsite or job site.
