From Wild Chinese Vine to Global Fruit

Kiwifruit originated as a wild vine fruit in central and eastern China, where it grew for centuries before seeds were carried to New Zealand in the early twentieth century. Growers there began cultivating and refining the fruit, eventually shaping it into the smooth oval shape and sweeter flavor recognized around the world today. The fruit was originally called Chinese gooseberry before being renamed kiwifruit, a name inspired by New Zealand's native kiwi bird because of the fuzzy brown skin.

The Fuzzy Skin and Bright Green Flesh

The thin brown fuzzy skin shown on the whole fruit here is edible, though many people peel it before eating because of its texture. Underneath, the flesh is typically bright green with a pale core, though gold-fleshed varieties with smoother skin have also become popular in recent decades. The tiny black seeds arranged in a ring pattern, visible in the sliced half, are edible and add a slight crunch to the fruit's soft texture.

Kiwi as a Vine-Grown Crop

Unlike tree fruits such as apples or peaches, kiwifruit grows on woody, twisting vines that need sturdy trellises to support their weight during the growing season. The vines require a period of winter chill to produce fruit reliably, which is why commercial kiwi orchards are concentrated in specific temperate growing regions rather than spread evenly across all climates. A single healthy vine can produce a large number of fruit each season once it matures.

Nutrition and Everyday Use

Kiwifruit is often highlighted for its high vitamin C content, sometimes containing more per serving than an orange of similar size. Because the fruit can be halved and eaten straight from the skin with a spoon, kiwi has become a common lunchbox and snack item in many households. That easy halved presentation is part of why the fruit is so often shown cut open in illustrations, since the seed pattern and bright core are part of what makes kiwi visually distinct from other fruit.

Counting the Seeds in the Ring

Look closely at the halved fruit in this picture and the tiny seeds line up in a neat ring circling the pale core, usually numbering close to a thousand specks packed into one fruit. Each seed is edible and barely noticeable when eaten, adding only a faint, gentle crunch against the soft green flesh. That ring pattern forms because the seeds develop along the inner wall of the fruit as it grows, which is also why a kiwi always looks the same no matter where it gets sliced across its middle.

An Enzyme That Softens Other Foods

Kiwifruit contains a natural enzyme called actinidin, which is strong enough to break down proteins, and that is part of why fresh kiwi can keep gelatin desserts from setting properly if added straight into the mix. Some cooks use mashed kiwi as a natural meat tenderizer for this same reason, letting the fruit's enzyme soften tougher cuts before cooking. That enzyme is also why the fruit can leave a slight tingling feeling on sensitive lips or tongues after eating a large amount.

Male and Female Vines

Most kiwi vines need both a male and a female plant growing nearby to produce fruit, since only the female vines actually bear kiwifruit and rely on the male vines' flowers for pollination. Orchard growers typically plant just one male vine for every several female vines, using bees or hand pollination to carry pollen between them during the short spring flowering window. This two-plant system is part of why home gardeners sometimes end up with a healthy, flowering kiwi vine that never actually produces fruit.
