Lemons are believed to have first grown in parts of Southeast Asia, likely as a natural cross between a citron and a bitter orange, long before the fruit reached the Mediterranean world. Traders carried lemon seeds and seedlings along overland and sea routes, and the fruit eventually took hold in warm coastal regions where citrus groves still thrive today. Unlike apples or pears grown from cold-hardy trees, lemon trees need consistent warmth and cannot survive hard frost, which limits where the fruit can be farmed outdoors.

A History Tied to Sailors and Scurvy

Lemons earned a place in maritime history once sailors discovered that citrus fruit helped prevent scurvy on long ocean voyages, a disease caused by lacking vitamin C. British ships eventually carried citrus rations so regularly that sailors picked up the nickname 'limeys,' even though lemons were used before limes became the standard supply. That practical medical use turned lemons into a valuable trade good long before refrigeration made fresh produce easy to transport worldwide.

Inside the Segmented Slice

The wedge pattern visible in a lemon slice comes from individual juice-filled segments called locules, each wrapped in a thin membrane and packed with tiny juice sacs. A single lemon can hold roughly eight to ten of these segments arranged around a central core, which is why a cross-section slice looks like a sunburst pattern once cut. That segmented structure is shared across most citrus fruits, though the segment count and juice sac size vary between lemons, limes, oranges, and grapefruits.

Lemon Trees and Year-Round Fruit

The Leaf and Stem Attached to the Fruit
